Amazon managed to end 2015 in full force and is now the third global tablet maker, reveals data from ABI Research. Compared to the same period of 2014, the company sold more than three times as many tablets in Q4 2015, especially thanks to the $50 USD Fire tablet.

The top 5 brands on the tablet market managed to sell the following number of units in Q4 2014 and 2015:

  • Apple - 21.4 and 16.1 million
  • Samsung - 11.1 and 9 million
  • Amazon - 1.5 and 5 million
  • Lenovo - 3.6 and 3.2 million
  • Huawei - 1.3 and 2.3 million

When talking about the market share controlled by each of the top three tablet makers in Q4 2015, Apple leads with 37.2 percent, followed by Samsung with 20.8 percent, while Amazon controls 11.5 percent, enough to get the third position. However, they recorded the most impressive growth compared to 2014 while the only other top 5 tablet maker to ship more units in Q4 2015 was Huawei.

Although I have been writing about new software and hardware for almost a decade, I consider myself to be old school. I always enjoy listening to music on CD or tape instead of digital files and I will not even get into the touchscreen vs physical keys debate. However, I also enjoy new technology, as I now have the chance to take a look at the future every day. I joined the Notebookcheck crew back in 2013 and I have no plans to leave the ship anytime soon.
