The good:  Includes HDMI, Bluetooth, and 802.11N Wi-Fi; inexpensive for a big-screen laptop.
The bad: Not configurable; chassis not stiff enough; some parts feel shoddy; no FireWire.
The bottom line: Gateway's budget 17-inch P-170L packs in plenty of extras, including an HDMI port, but this is definitely a laptop for media watchers, not for gamers.

The Gateway P-170L QS is a good bargain when you factor in the $1,299 price tag and a new design. At this price, though, you're getting passable features and mediocre performance parts. It does provide a decent desktop-like experience, given its 17-inch widescreen. I think this system would be more attractive to users if it reached the $999 price point, like the Toshiba Satellite P205-S6237. For a more comprehensive media center, with options for an HD DVD drive and dedicated graphics, check out the HP Pavilion dv9500t.

Source: PC Mag English Archive.org version
Three thousand dollars might sound expensive for any laptop, but when you consider the $600 CPU and the even pricier graphics card, the Gateway P-171XL FX doesn't seem like such a bad deal. If you're a gamer on a tight budget, you can always go with lower-priced alternatives, such as the Toshiba Satellite X205-SLi4 ($2,499) or the ASUS G2S ($1,850). Or you could really trick it out by going with my Editors' Choice, the Dell XPS M1730 ($4,024). But for those gamers whose budgets fall somewhere in between, the Gateway P-171XL FX has a good balance of premium parts and price for a gaming laptop.

Gateway P-171XL FX Edition Review

Pricing in at $2,999, our Gateway P-171XL FX Edition review model is priced towards the middle of the gaming notebook segment, with the Toshiba X205 coming in at $2,000 and the Dell M1730 starting at $3,538 for a system with similar capabilities. For consumers looking at purchasing one of these models, it really comes down to user preference, on what brand they trust the most, and what design you want to carry around to show off at class. The Gateway offers very good hardware and performance for the price, and is a worthy contender against gaming notebooks.

We were impressed with the Alienware M9750, but we’re even more impressed that the P-171 has all-around better hardware, and costs $1,500 less. It’s truly a remarkable achievement to offer this much power at a reasonable price point. Even better, Gateway is also offering two other FX notebook models with slightly lower specs for $2K and $1600, which is crazy affordable for a gaming notebook. Though we don’t like the lame trialware Gateway includes with the notebook it’s nothing 30 minutes of cleanup won’t fix. And we’d also like to see a DVI-out port instead of the legacy VGA port, though the inclusion of an HDMI connector is a nice touch.

This sweetly priced all-purpose laptop with a big screen would make a good second household PC, but heavy gaming is out. Attention, Best Buy shoppers: This 17-inch laptop costs just $900 (as of 11/29/07), and we found the Gateway P-6825 for an even better $749 at Best Buy's online store. It's a modest portable in some respects, to be sure: Its speed is middling and some of its features are not top-shelf.

Gateway P-6831FX Gaming Notebook
Source: Hot Hardware English Archive.org version
The P-6831FX produced excellent scores in all of our gaming related benchmarks. Not even the Dell XPS M1730 with its dual GeForce 8700M GT's in SLI could outperform the single GeForce 8800M GTS powering the P-6831FX. Though Dell has since upgraded the M1730 with dual GeForce 8800M GPUs as well. It is obvious that the P-6831FX's performance is bottlenecked by the low-end processor, but it still managed to produce amazing benchmark scores in our gaming tests. None of the other the mid-range notebooks in our test came close to the P-6831FX when it came to gaming. Unfortunately the picture is quite different in productivity and CPU intensive tasks. It was easily outclassed in nearly every module of PCMark Vantage and performance in 3DMar06's CPU module was also quite poor.

Gateway P-6831FX User Review
Source: Notebookreview.com English Archive.org version
Seeing this kind of performance from an attractive and upgradable $1,400 notebook should make the boutique notebook makers more than a little nervous. Especially considering that it can run cicles around many of last year's SLI notebooks even with its lowly processor. If this notebook was completely closed, with major components soldered on, at this price it would still be a good deal. But Gateway is offering so much more. The CPU is upgradable. Extra mini-PCIe and Hard Drive bays sit empty, waiting for you to fill them with some future goodness. And peering deep into the FX's innards, I could faintly see another socket exactly where I expect the GPU to be - so there might be some pleasant surprises for the more adventurous hardware tweaker. In short, this is a notebook that should see even an avid gamer get two years of use from. Consider the rapid pace of game development and you will appreciate the compliment.

For the price, you cannot beat this laptop. I spent nearly a week trying to find a laptop that dollar-per-dollar matched this. The only thing that comes close is the new Toshiba Qosmio, but due to its horrible shade of ruby red, will probably scare more customers away. So things do limit this from being perfect. The fact it has the ability to have two drives, but no raid is odd. Also, the screen casing, while nice, is a bit flimsy, but nothing cheap. I also don't get putting 667mhz memory when 800 is basically the same price. Oh in a perfect world i guess.

Given a current price of about $1300 the Gateway P-7811 FX gaming notebook is a excellent deal. It’s a practical machine for someone who wants to do some gaming, watch some video, and replace their desktop with a system that can occasionally be moved. It would be great to see an option for an upgraded processor, and there are some small issues that should be fixed down the road, but right now it offers more value for your dollar than almost any other gaming notebook on the market.

Gateway has produced some very affordable high performance gaming focused laptops with its P series laptops. Their latest P-7908u FX certainly brings high performance graphics to the table but too many of its other components lag behind for it to be an excellent gaming system. Gateway: Gateway, Incorporated. is a computer hardware company based in California which develops, manufactures, supports, and markets a wide range of personal computers, computer monitors, servers, and computer accessories. AOL acquired Gateway.net, the online component of Gateway  Inc., in 1999. 2007, Acer completed its acquisition of Gateway for approximately US$710 million. The market share outside of the US market is rather low.

In 2014 to 2016, Gateway did no longer belong to the Top 10 laptop manufacturers/distributors. Newer devices from Gateway are hardly reviewed by specialist media any longer (as of 2016).

These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip on a Mobile Intel 965GM chipset. It is the successor of GMA 950 and features a fully programmable pipeline (supports Aero Glass fully and DirectX 10 with newest drivers). The peformance of the X3100 is clearly better than the GMA 950, still demanding modern games won't run fluently.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip on Mobile Intel 945GM chipset. It is a faster clocked version of the GMA 900 and supports no hardware T&L (Transform & Lightning) accelleration (which is required for some games).

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTS:

The Nvidia GeForce 8800M GTS is based upon the Desktop G92 chip and offers better performance than the GeForce 8700M GT due to a 256 bit memory bus and larger number of Shader cores.

NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS:

Based on the desktop 9600 GT (G94 core), the 9800M GTS is produced in 65 nm and 55 nm on the 512 MB and 1024 MB models, respectively. The performance of the GTS is comparable to the GT version due to the higher clock speed. The PureVideo HD engine allows the GPU to decode HD videos.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M:

The Nvidia GeForce GTX 260M is essentially a higher clocked GeForce 9800M GTX based on the G92b core built under a 55nm manufacturing process. Because of the architectural difference, the 260M is less powerful (and quite dissimilar) to the similarly named desktop GeForce GTX 260.

Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).

The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.

T7250: Mid-range (at the time of annoucement) dual core processor based on the Merom core.

T5550:

Slow clocked dual core processor based on the Merom-2M core without virtualization functions.

P8400:

Middle class dual core CPU with a TDP of 25 Watt. For high end gamer the performance could be not sufficient (for class 1 graphic cards).

P8700:

Mid-range dual core processor with 3 MB level 3 cache and a TDP of 25 Watt.

Intel Core 2 Extreme: The fastest Core 2 Duo variants of Intel are called Core 2 Extreme. Technically, these processors are based on a Merom/Penryn (X9000) core like all other Core 2 Duo  processors,  too.

X7900: Formally fastest Core 2 processor of the Merom series. Compared to fast Core 2 Duo models, the X7900 uses more power (44 W TDP) and got a free multiplicator.

17.00: This display size is a standard format for desktop replacements (DTR). The DTR laptops are heavier to carry, need more power, but texts are easy to read and high resolutions are no problem. DTR are mainly intended for stationary desk use, where weight and energy hunger don't matter. In return, you enjoy the advantages of high resolutions (more details, better legibility).

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

3.7 kg:

A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.

4.4 kg:

A laptop in this weight range is a heavyweight that you rarely carry around. This is meant for desktops and the devices tend to score with a large display and high performance and replace desktop devices.

78.81%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
