Reviews for the Gateway P-7811FX

Gateway P-7811 FX Gaming Notebook
Source: Geek.com English Archive.org version
Given a current price of about $1300 the Gateway P-7811 FX gaming notebook is a excellent deal. It’s a practical machine for someone who wants to do some gaming, watch some video, and replace their desktop with a system that can occasionally be moved. It would be great to see an option for an upgraded processor, and there are some small issues that should be fixed down the road, but right now it offers more value for your dollar than almost any other gaming notebook on the market.

The Gateway P-7811 FX has a very good keyboard and screen with an enthusiast video card and surprisingly good battery life. Its port placement isn't ideal and some parts of the chassis are not built as well. However, these do not detract from the fact that at between $500-1000 less than any other notebook with the same class graphics card and components, the P-7811 FX is great for gamers on a budget.

We don't know how Gateway makes money selling these things, but the combination of high-end components and low price makes the 17-inch Gateway P-7811FX the best mobile gaming deal going right now.

Multimedia buffs and casual gamers will love the Gateway P-7811FX's 1080p-quality resolution and energy-efficient premium parts if they can get past its back-breaking weight and 64-bit compatibility issues.

Solid productivity performance, excellent graphics, and a reasonable price tag make the Gateway P-7811FX a wise choice for anyone seeking a desktop replacement notebook that can do it all. Some multimedia mavens may prefer the HP Pavilion dv7, which offers better sound and adds a Blu-ray drive and TV tuner for $500 more. But this Gateway system blows away HP’s dv7 when it comes to 3D games and its higher-resolution display.

Gateway has updated its FX gaming notebook lineup with Intel's newest high-performance Centrino 2 mobile chipset, and the result is the $1,399 P-7811FX, which delivers superb performance for the money. (It's currently available only at Best Buy.) The Gateway P-7811FX is the fastest notebook we've tested at this price range, and is an excellent gaming laptop, despite its loud cooling fans.

NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS:

Based on the desktop 9600 GT (G94 core), the 9800M GTS is produced in 65 nm and 55 nm on the 512 MB and 1024 MB models, respectively. The performance of the GTS is comparable to the GT version due to the higher clock speed. The PureVideo HD engine allows the GPU to decode HD videos.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).

The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.

P8400:

Middle class dual core CPU with a TDP of 25 Watt. For high end gamer the performance could be not sufficient (for class 1 graphic cards).

17.00":

This range for display formats was and is a rarity. It is larger than the general standard of 15 inches, but not yet in the range of large workstations. One usually has higher screen resolutions available, but portability suffers from that.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

4.2 kg:

A laptop in this weight range is a heavyweight that you rarely carry around. This is meant for desktops and the devices tend to score with a large display and high performance and replace desktop devices.

Gateway: Gateway, Incorporated. is a computer hardware company based in California which develops, manufactures, supports, and markets a wide range of personal computers, computer monitors, servers, and computer accessories. AOL acquired Gateway.net, the online component of Gateway  Inc., in 1999. 2007, Acer completed its acquisition of Gateway for approximately US$710 million. The market share outside of the US market is rather low.

In 2014 to 2016, Gateway did no longer belong to the Top 10 laptop manufacturers/distributors. Newer devices from Gateway are hardly reviewed by specialist media any longer (as of 2016).

79.8%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
