After numerous details were leaked about the Fujifilm GFX 100 RF last December, Andrea Pizzini and FujiRumors have now posted the first two photos allegedly depicting the compact medium format camera. The camera is rumoured to be only marginally larger than a Fujifilm X-Pro 3 or Leica Q3, despite having a sensor measuring 43.9 x 32.9 mm (~1.7 x 1.3 in), which is 67% bigger than a full format sensor.
Fujifilm has opted for a relatively plain, black body with the characteristic Fuji design and managed to cram an electronic viewfinder into the camera despite its compact size. The device also boasts dedicated dials for adjusting shutter speed, ISO and exposure compensation. One new feature is a special dial on the back for selecting the aspect ratio when taking photos. There is also a rather unique “crop lever” used for enabling digital zoom.
In the embedded teaser video below, Fujifilm has essentially confirmed that the GFX 100 RF will be officially announced on 20 March during the Fujifilm X Summit in Prague. The camera will reportedly launch at a price of about $5,000 and feature a 100 MP medium format sensor coupled with a 35 mm f/4 lens, equivalent to a 28 mm f/3.2 lens in 35 mm terms.
If the rumours are true, such a slow lens could negate the benefits of having a large sensor. For instance, the Leica Q3 combines a full format sensor and a 28 mm f/1.7 lens to achieve low-noise images in low-light situations and a shallow depth of field. The lens on the Fujifilm GFX 100 RF is likely non-interchangeable – or at least the camera doesn’t seem to have a button for this.
