If you enjoy tough boss fights and are curious about a game rooted in Slavic mythology and Bosnian folklore, Bygone Dreams: Prophecy could be worth checking out. The prologue is free to play on Steam and currently holds the top spot in the “Trending Free” section.

Bygone Dreams: Prophecy is an action RPG with a souls-like flair that draws players into a surreal world shaped by Slavic mythology and Bosnian folklore. The story follows Wa, a spectral guardian who awakens in the dream realm of Lume, where a creeping nightmare corruption threatens to consume everything. To restore balance, Wa must uncover and harness forgotten ancient powers.

Players will take on formidable bosses, solve environmental puzzles and explore enigmatic, dreamlike locations. In true soulslike fashion, combat in Bygone Dreams: Prophecy demands precise timing as players weave together melee strikes, ranged attacks, magical abilities and well-timed dodges. The journey is set to an atmospheric soundtrack featuring over 50 original compositions and enhanced by fully voiced cutscenes. Visually, the game combines cel-shading with lithographic elements to create a distinctive, hand-drawn aesthetic.

Free prologue is well received

Bygone Dreams: Prophecy is developed by Prime Time in partnership with publisher GrabTheGames. Players can dive into the experience through a free prologue, released on May 6, which offers around 2 to 3 hours of gameplay, according to a press release. This early glimpse into the game has been met with a warm reception on Steam.

According to early Steam reviews, players praise Bygone Dreams: Prophecy for its immersive atmosphere, distinctive visual style and rich orchestral soundtrack. The combat system is described as impactful and well-designed, while the game runs smoothly and supports multiple languages, including voice-overs. Some criticisms mention stiff cutscenes, limited rewards for exploration and a lack of features – though some players note these are understandable given it's a prologue. As of now, 90% of the 21 user reviews are positive, and the game holds the top spot in Steam's “Trending Free” charts.

Full release in June

The full release of Bygone Dreams is scheduled for June 2025, though the developers have yet to reveal the final price for the souls-like RPG. If you're intrigued, you can already add the game to your Steam wishlist to stay updated.
