Google has announced a new function for Fitbit smartwatches, which is not so much for exercise or entertainment purposes, but is a tangible health function that aims to be of benefit to patients and medical staff.

Smartwatches now offer an extremely wide range of functions. Depending on the model, not only can heart rate be measured, but an electrocardiogram can also be produced. Although a single-channel electrocardiogram is not comparable to a professional ECG in terms of informative value, it can detect cardiac arrhythmias. These are very common and increase the risk of stroke, for example. Treating cardiac arrhythmias is possible and smartwatches can play a part in detecting them.

Google has now announced a new function that relates to the detection of atrial fibrillation. Until now, users could only export a corresponding report manually and give it to their doctor or other medical personnel. Now, it is also possible to make such data available to medical staff directly. Access is possible via the Fitbit Web API, but users must of course agree to the procedure, as this is critical health data.

By accessing the data, medical staff can, for example, improve a heart health program and offer a professional electrocardiogram in the event of abnormal data. According to Google, researchers should also benefit from access to the data. For example, seasonal effects in atrial fibrillation or connections between the frequency and the outcome could be recorded.
