YouTuber ETA Prime has revealed the first AMD Ryzen Z1-based mini-PC. Coming soon, the new mini-PC will eventually be available with the Ryzen Z1 Extreme too.

ETA Prime has lifted the lid on a new mini-PC powered by the AMD Ryzen Z1, an APU that has been previously limited to the ASUS ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go. Initially, AMD claimed that it had designed the Ryzen Z1 series specifically for gaming handhelds. While the Ryzen Z1 and Ryzen Z1 Extreme mirror the Ryzen 5 7540U and Ryzen 7 7840U in most instances, AMD has tweaked their voltage curves to maximise power efficiency and battery life.

Arguably, this makes less sense for a device that relies upon mains power like a mini-PC. However, ETA Prime theorises that gaming handheld manufacturers have started offloading the Ryzen Z1 to their mini-PC counterparts because of the APU's unpopularity compared to the more powerful Ryzen Z1 Extreme. With that being said, the YouTuber adds that the unnamed mini-PC manufacturer hopes to sell Ryzen Z1 Extreme-powered SKUs eventually, too.

Also, ETA Prime notes that this unnamed mini-PC relies on 5,600 MT/s RAM, compared to the 6,400 MT/s equivalent in the ASUS ROG Ally. Thus, the former will deliver worse memory performance that could affect gaming performance in some instances. Conversely, the added cooling capacity of a mini-PC should allow the Ryzen Z1 and Ryzen Z1 Extreme to operate at significantly higher TDPs than they can in gaming handhelds. A release date and pricing have not been revealed yet, although ETA Prime mentioned that it may eventually launch on Indiegogo first. For reference, the Ryzen Z1 mini-PC will also feature the following ports:

  • 1x 3.5 mm jack
  • 1x DC-in
  • 2x HDMI
  • 1x RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet
  • 4x USB Type-A
  • 1x USB Type-C
