The successor to the popular Fiio M11 Plus is now on the horizon and promises even better sound than its predecessor. Thanks to Android, the music player supports all common streaming apps, while Bluetooth aptX HD and Sony LDAC also enable high quality wireless audio.

The brand new FiiO M23 has just been presented as the successor to the FiiO M11 Plus, but the manufacturer has adopted many components directly from the previous model. This applies to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 from 2017 as well as the 5.5-inch touchscreen, which has a resolution of just 1440 x 720.

The RAM remains unchanged at 4 GB, and the built-in flash storage is still relatively small at 64 GB, but can be expanded up to 2 TB via a microSD memory card. FiiO once again uses Android 10 - the system from 2019 is slowly but surely running the risk of selected apps no longer being supported. Instead, the FiiO M23 focuses entirely on audio quality and uses an AKM AK419EQ and an AKM AK4499EX DAC, which can decode both DSD256 and PCM up to 32-bit at 384 kHz.

Two THX AAA-78+ amplifiers allow for an output power of 1000 mW at 32 ohms in Super High Gain mode; even at 300 ohms impedance, 236 mW of power is said to be possible. However, this mode is only available when the player is powered via USB-C. Users can choose between 'Low', 'Medium' and 'High' for adjusting the output to the requirements of their respective headphones.

The FiiO M23 can be connected via a 3.5 mm or a balanced 4.4 mm connection, but also supports Bluetooth aptX HD and LDAC, both as a transmitter and receiver. At 5500 mAh, the battery is slightly smaller than in the predecessor, reducing the runtime by one hour to 10.5 hours of music playback.

Price and availability

The FiiO M23 hi-fi music player is expected to be available from April 2024 at a recommended retail price of $700, a little more than the FiiO M11 Plus, which is currently priced at $649.99 at Amazon. A cheaper FiiO M21 is to follow in December together with the more expensive FiiO M27, both for which the prices are uncertain at present.
