Lenovo, Microsoft and others are rumoured to be some of the first OEMs to release Snapdragon X laptops to rival recent MacBook Air and MacBook Pro generations. Now, more evidence has emerged that Windows 11 will require at least 16 GB of RAM for its reputed 'AI Explorer'.

Microsoft has already lifted the lid on the Surface Pro 10, which it revealed over a month ago alongside the Surface Laptop 6. However, these were 'for Business' editions powered by Intel Meteor Lake processors of various persuasions. By contrast, Microsoft has long been rumoured to have developed ARM alternatives for consumers that will be built around Qualcomm's Snapdragon X platform.

So far, Qualcomm has only shown reference machines, one of which we recently got to spend some time with at an event in London. However, numerous Snapdragon X machines appear to be in the late stages of development, at least based on recent Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 and Yoga Slim 7 'Snapdragon Edition' leaks anyway. While many details remain unknown for now, @thebookisclosed has discovered several details that could relate to their releases, along with the Surface Pro 10.

In a recent tweet, @thebookisclosed highlighted that Microsoft will require devices to feature certain hardware for them to run its new 'AI Explorer' within Windows 11. Specifically, AI Explorer requires an ARM64 CPU, a Snapdragon X NPU, 16 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD. It remains to be seen how AI Explorer will play with existing hardware though, including those without dedicated NPUs.

Incidentally, a recent Geekbench leak confirmed that Microsoft had developed a Surface device with 16 GB of RAM, as well as a Snapdragon X Plus chipset. As such, it seems that 16 GB of RAM may be the minimum RAM configuration for Snapdragon X machines running Windows, unlike the 'for Business' versions of the Surface Laptop 6 and Surface Pro 10. Currently, Microsoft is expected to reveal consumer versions of those machines on May 20. With that being said, Qualcomm has hinted that it will outline new Snapdragon X details tomorrow.
