Anno 1800 transports players to the 19th century, an era shaped by steam engines, industrialization and colonial expansion. You begin with a modest village made up of a trading post and a handful of farmhouses. As the game progresses, this humble settlement evolves into a thriving metropolis filled with factories, ships, railways and grand residences.
Although the journey begins in the Old World, it’s not long before you set sail for the New World – a tropical region rich in exotic resources like rum, cotton and coffee. There, players establish new settlements and ship these valuable goods back to the Old World to satisfy the demands of the upper classes and drive their homeland’s economic growth.
Beyond construction and trade logistics, naval strength and military power are just as crucial. With frigates, ships of the line and armored monitors, you can take on pirates, rivals or entire fleets. Naval battles are both tactically challenging and key to securing your place in the global balance of power. By upgrading your military and protecting trade routes wisely, you can build an empire that thrives across every region. Thanks to co-op and multiplayer modes, this empire can be created together with friends – or defended against them in fierce competition.
Strong build-up system, weak naval battles
In its review, the German magazine GameStar awarded Anno 1800 a solid score of 80 points, praising the game’s deep construction mechanics, engaging endgame and strong replay value. Highlights also included the detailed visuals, smooth transition between the Old and New Worlds and the well-executed co-op and multiplayer modes, all of which contribute to long-lasting enjoyment. However, GameStar's reviewers found the naval battles a bit too simplistic and the campaign lacking in depth. They also noted that the required multitasking might overwhelm newcomers.
Anno 1800 has also received strong feedback across major platforms. On Metacritic, it holds a Metascore of 81 and a User Score of 7.9. Over on Steam, the building strategy game boasts more than 21,000 reviews, 81% of which are positive.
