Huawei has launched EMUI 11, its latest in-house OS. EMUI 11 is currently based on Android 10, but features numerous changes from EMUI 10 and EMUI 10.1. Huawei has opened its beta program to ten devices too, albeit only those in China for the time being.

Huawei has unveiled EMUI 11, its latest OS. The Chinese company showcased its in-house OS at its annual Developer Conference, the live stream of which you can watch again here. EMUI 11 is currently based on Android 10, but Android 11 should reach the OS eventually, though. Google published the Android 11 source code this week, as XDA Developers points out, so Huawei would not have had enough time to finalise an Android 11-based version of EMUI 11. Nonetheless, Huawei has made multiple changes from EMUI 10 and EMUI 10.1.

Huawei has refined the animations in EMUI 11 to make them look more natural. According to Pocket-lint and XDA Developers, Huawei based its changes on results from "human factor research", where it tracked the eye movements of beta testers to determine where they looked when navigating through the UI. Multitasking has also been improved through Smart Multi-Window, which makes apps floating and resizeable. Minimising these floating apps causes a bubble icon to appear should you want to access them again.

System apps like Gallery and Notepad have been improved, as has the Always on Display (AoD), which has gained greater customisation options. Huawei has synchronised vibrations across the whole system, too. XDA Developers has published an EMUI 11 beta changelog that we have included below, should you wish to read over it. Mishaal Rahman has written an in-depth hands-on about EMUI 11 on the P40 Pro, also.

  • Technology for people

    • Smart AOD

      • EMUI 11 refines the user experience and brings vivid, dynamic visual elements for the Always On Display (AOD). AOD now allows you to customise your screen and showcase your personal style with text and images even when the screen is off.

    • Multi-Window

      • Multi-Window allows you to open apps in a floating window for multitasking. You can relocate the floating window to the desired location or minimise it to a floating bubble for easier access later.

    • Smoother animations

      • The brand new, intuitive animations throughout EMUI 11 create a smoother, more unified, and visually pleasing user experience when touching items or sliding on the screen.

    • Subtle effects

      • Whether you’re toggling switches on or off, subtle effects have been enhanced throughout the OS for greater visual satisfaction.

  • Seamless connections

    • Multi-screen Collaboration

      • This is a special feature that enables your devices to work together to achieve their full potential. You can mirror your phone to your laptop’s screen to improve your productivity with multiple app windows readily available. (This feature requires a Huawei laptop with PC Manager of version 11.0 or later.)

    • Privacy-based screen projection

      • When you project your phone onto an external display, messages and incoming calls are displayed only on your phone screen, both protecting your privacy and ensuring the continuity of screen projection.

    • Super Notepad

      • Notepad now supports editing notes simultaneously from multiple Huawei devices. For example, you can insert a photo from your phone to the note being edited on your tablet.
      • You can now quickly identify and extract text from images or documents, edit the text, and then export and share it. Creating a digital version of a paper document has never been easier.

Huawei has already started rolling out the inaugural EMUI 11 beta to some handsets, too. Huawei Central points out that Chinese handsets are currently the only ones eligible to download EMUI 11 beta build. However, it adds that eligibility "may soon expand" to global handsets. The list of eligible devices for EMUI 11 beta is as follows:

  1. Huawei P40
  2. Huawei P40 Pro
  3. Huawei P40 Pro+
  4. Huawei Mate 30
  5. Huawei Mate 30 5G
  6. Huawei Mate 30 Pro
  7. Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G
  8. Huawei Mate 30 RS Porsche Design
  9. Huawei MatePad Pro
  10. Huawei MatePad Pro 5G
