E3 2022 in-person event cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic
VentureBeat has reported that the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), which was intended to take place in-person in Los Angeles, US, in 2022, has been cancelled due to fears about the COVID-19 pandemic. E3 is one of the largest events in the video games industry and showcases many of the biggest video game reveals from top publishers in the business.
Since the Omicron and other variants of COVID-19 have seen huge spikes in infection and hospitalisation in the US, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has decided to forego a physical event. The ESA stated, ‘due to the ongoing health risks surrounding COVID-19 and its potential impact on the safety of exhibitors and attendees, E3 will not be held in person in 2022’.
The first E3 took place in 1995 and was held every year since then until 2019. Due to the global pandemic, E3 2020 was cancelled entirely and E3 2021 was held as an online-only event. While it has not been officially confirmed, E3 2022 will most likely be a digital-only event once again. The ESA said that it is ‘excited about the possibilities of an online event’.
