Dell has unveiled the U2724D and U2724DE, a pair of UltraSharp monitors that are the first to combine IPS Black technology with a 120 Hz refresh rate. Dell's new UltraSharp monitors have also been certified by TÜV Rheinland as providing exceptional eye comfort.

Dell has expanded its UltraSharp series with the U2724D and U2724DE, two 27-inch and 1440p (2,560 x 1,440) monitors that differ in I/O and pricing. Principally, Dell is seeking to distinguish the pair with what it claims are two world firsts. On the one hand, the U2724D and U2724DE are currently the only monitors that integrate a 120 Hz refresh rate and IPS Black technology.

As such, the pair have 2,000:1 contrast ratios coupled with 350 nits peak brightness and 98% DCI-P3 colour space coverage. Dell adds that it will factory calibrate both monitors to sRGB, BT.709, DCI-P3 and Display P3 colour spaces with Delta E deviations of <2. On the other hand, the U2724D and U2724DE are also the first outing for TÜV Rheinland's five-star eye comfort certification.

For some reason, Dell does not provide too many details about this certification other than it is a 'brand-new industry standard for eye comfort'. However, TÜV Rheinland states the following:

The 'Eye Comfort' certification process examines three technical dimensions (image quality, ambient light management, eye care technology) and 15 different test categories that have shown to have a significant impact on eye comfort. Features like good image quality, high refresh rate and good ambient light management, such as intelligent brightness and CCT adaptation to ambient light, help reduce visual fatigue...Only if a screen achieves a 5-star rating in all 15 categories will the overall result also be a 5-star rating...For example, a 5 Star 'Eye Comfort' Certified monitor has a high refresh rate (≥ 120 Hz) and high color accuracy. It also has hardware to reduce blue light and flicker, as well as brightness and color temperature control for ambient lighting. These features enhance health protection and reduce visual fatigue.

Additionally, both monitors have single HDMI and DisplayPort 1.4 ports, plus a 3.5 mm jack, three USB Type-A ports and a USB Type-C port that also provides 15 W USB Power Delivery. The U2724DE adds single Thunderbolt 3 and RJ45 ports though, along with KVM functionality. Moreover, Dell has equipped the U2724D and U2724DE with ambient light sensors that can automatically adjust brightness and colour levels.

The pair have fully adjustable stands too, although the exact specifications of either remain unknown for now. According to Dell, both monitors will be available from November 9 with a US$479.99 and US$649.99 MSRPs for the U2724D and U2724DE, respectively.
