Cyberpunk 2077: Patch 1.62 delivers real-time path traced visuals with eye catching results
CDProjekt Red has now delivered RT Overdrive mode for Cyberpunk 2077 by way of Patch 1.62. While the patch version number implies that RT Overdrive makes minor changes to the game, RT Overdrive overhauls ray tracing to deliver a path traced experience. Additionally, Patch 1.62 introduces NVIDIA DLAS and Intel XeSS 1.1 support, as well as a refined benchmark mode experience. Please see CDProjekt Red's patch notes for more details.
RT Overdrive is arguably the biggest change that Patch 1.62 makes to Cyberpunk 2077 though and provides a look at how conventional ray tracing differs from real-time path tracing. For reference, RT Overdrive mode has been designed with RTX 40 series graphics cards in mind. However, the feature is still functional on last-generation RTX 30 series cards.
Likewise, AMD's RX 6000 and RX 7000 series are compatible but will not provide as smooth an experience as the GeForce RTX 4070 upwards. Digital Foundry has provided overviews and comparisons of RT Overdrive mode in action too. Ultimately, DLSS is required to make RT Overdrive mode playable on any current generation graphics card, GeForce RTX 4090 included. Non-RTX 40 series cards are limited to 1080p and 30 FPS gaming with RT Overdrive mode activated too. Please note that RT Overdrive should be considered a technical preview for now and is not a finished project yet.
