A new high-end mechanical keyboard called Cleaver is now up for pre-order, and it does more than just leaning into minimalism. Milled from a solid block of aluminum and designed by Serene Industries (which also created the Icebreaker), this Hall effect keyboard is priced at a hefty $850 - but the design clearly has a target audience in mind.
Instead of chasing extra keys or flashy gimmicks, the Cleaver strips things down. It uses a monoblock layout, which combines the chassis, electronics, and silicone core into a single unit. According to Serene, the PCB is silicone-potted for dust and splash resistance, and there's even a 1/4-20” thread embedded into the body, possibly for mounting or rig setups. It looks like a desk ornament but functions as a full mechanical keyboard with wired Hall effect switches that are hot-swappable. Keycaps are also made from aluminum, perforated with 1204 holes for RGB lighting to shine through, and that's a spec that’s more about precision manufacturing than just looks.
The case itself is thinner than it looks. Even though Cleaver uses full-height switches, its layered build allows it to feel low-profile, the company states. That design decision, along with the aluminum frame and silicone-dampened base, keeps the sound signature clean while providing dust and splash protection.
Everything about the keyboard is overbuilt, right down to the key legends and USB-C port. It's also fully made and assembled in the US, with production beginning two weeks after launch. At this price point, it’s not meant for casual buyers - it’s clearly aimed at collectors or die-hard enthusiasts who’ve been waiting for something more experimental (and stunning, of course).
If that sounds like your kind of thing, Cleaver is available to pre-order now in a Windows or Mac layout with clear and black anodized finishes, and aluminum keycaps. It's worth noting that this isn’t your everyday clacker. It’s more like a statement piece with switches.
