“Cheap and tacky”: GTA 6 fans slam $400 collector’s box
Rockstar has unveiled the “Goodtime State – Vice City Collection,” a limited-edition merchandise box centered around Macca the Gator, an alligator and well-known TV mascot from Leonida. Also included are Oakley sunglasses, a New Era cap, a belt bag and a double-sided poster featuring a map of Leonida. Incidentally, that poster also appears to have leaked the GTA 6 map. The package is rounded out by a selection of smaller extras, including a magnetic mirror, shot glass, bar spoon, razor-blade keychain, pins and stickers. The collector’s box launches on November 19 and costs $399 in the USA. Despite that price, however, there is one major omission: GTA 6 itself is sold separately. That decision, along with the selection of merchandise, has sparked plenty of criticism on the GTA6 subreddit.

The box has received a rather frosty reception on Reddit so far. The top comment in the thread, which had more than 1,300 comments at the time of writing, simply asks: “This is $400?” followed by a broken-heart emoji. Another highly upvoted comment calls the contents “cheap and tacky.” Rockstar’s choice of Macca the Gator as the centerpiece has also left some fans puzzled. Many argue that a small statue of Lucia and Jason would have made far more sense for a GTA 6 collector’s item.
The Oakley sunglasses and New Era cap have fared somewhat better. As products from established brands, they are likely to be a step above typical gaming merchandise in terms of quality, and some fans do like them. Several commenters, however, say they would rather buy the items separately than spend $399 on the entire package. Aside from the Macca the Gator figure, the sunglasses and cap are likely among the most valuable items included. Whether that comes close to justifying the asking price is debatable. The sunglasses are a pair of Oakley Frogskins, which Oakley currently sells for around $139, while New Era mesh caps can be found on websites like Fanatics for less than $30.
A collector’s box without the game?
For many fans, the biggest sticking point is that a $399 collector’s box does not even come with GTA 6. Without the game (available for pre-order on Amazon), it is “not even a collectors edition since it doesn’t include the game. It’s just a collection of merch lol.,” writes u/Sektsioon – a comment that has received plenty of support. Rockstar itself calls the package a “Collector’s Box” but offers no explanation as to why the game is not included. Whether the merchandise alone is worth $399 ultimately depends on how much value collectors place on the individual items.
