Deal | First time under $5 on Steam: Tactical RPG smashes previous all-time low

In Jagged Alliance 3, players take command of a mercenary squad in the fictional West African country of Grand Chien. After the president is kidnapped and the paramilitary organization “The Legion” increasingly takes control, the team is tasked with stabilizing the political situation and rescuing the head of state. However, the mission isn't just about eliminating enemies: The mercenaries must win over allies, secure key territories and gradually push back the Legion's influence.

In terms of gameplay, Jagged Alliance 3 offers classic turn-based tactics: Instead of controlling a single main character, players assemble their own team from a variety of mercenaries. Snipers, medics, technicians and explosives experts, for example, can be combined into a squad. There is no rigid class system, allowing characters to be developed quite flexibly through equipment, weapons and perks.

Players have plenty of tactical freedom during combat. Cover, lines of sight, elevation and the positioning of individual mercenaries all play an important role, while enemies can be ambushed or targeted on specific body parts. At the same time, players have to keep an eye on ammunition, injuries and equipment. Those looking for an additional challenge can play with permadeath enabled. The campaign can also be completed cooperatively with a second player.

In its review, IGN was particularly impressed by Jagged Alliance 3's tactical combat system. The publication especially praised the extensive freedom when assembling a team, the different ways to approach situations and the distinctive mercenaries. The varied maps and campaign lasting more than 40 hours were also well received. Criticism mainly focused on the sometimes limited ammunition supply, restricted suppression mechanics and an economy that loses some of its tension later in the game. Overall, IGN awarded the game a strong 9 out of 10.

Jagged Alliance 3 has also been well received on Steam. 89% of nearly 15,000 player reviews are positive. On Metacritic, the title has a Metascore of 81, while the user score stands at 7.9.

90% off on Steam for the first time

Jagged Alliance 3 is 90% off on Steam until October 1, bringing the price down to $4.49 from just under $45. According to SteamDB, the previous lowest price was $13.49 with a 70% discount. The current deal therefore significantly undercuts the previous all-time low. On the Steam Deck, the tactical RPG is rated as “Playable.”
