Sometimes all you need is a break from the corporate hum-drum to head back home and breathe the fresh mountain air. That's exactly the premise of Dungeons of Hinterberg, except when the main character, Luisa, arrives in her hometown, things aren't all as they seem. Dungeons of Hinterberg is a quaint mix between a dungeon crawler, an RPG, a 3D puzzle-platformer, and a cosy game, and for the duration of the current Steam sale, it has been discounted by 60% to as little as $9.19, its lowest-ever price.
Dungeons of Hinterberg gameplay
As the name suggests, in Dungeons of Hinterberg, you explore the dungeons underneath the Alpine town of Hinterberg, uncovering their secrets and defeating the monsters that you encounter along the way. The ARPG features fully fleshed-out combat, replete with a magic system. Part of the game's progression mechanics and much of its story rely on the player interacting with the townsfolk of Hinterberg, where building relationships will unlock and level-up perks and buffs for both your weapons and your magical abilities.
Of course, puzzles are a massive part of the game, and one of the reasons for much of the game's rave reviews — of which it has many, boasting a 91% positive rating on Steam. According to the reviews, the puzzles are fun and challenging, varying throughout the game to keep things fresh and engaging. There are over 25 dungeons to explore in Dungeons of Hinterberg, and they all feature their own unique look and feel, all within the bright, colourful, hand-crafted art style.
Low minimum requirements and Linux compatibility
To sweeten the deal a little more, Dungeons of Hinterberg has a Platinum ProtonDB rating, indicating that it should run quite well on the Steam Deck and other Linux distributions. Gaming handhelds, like the Asus ROG Ally X and Lenovo Legion Go (curr. $599.99 at Best Buy) should have no problem running Dungeons of Hinterberg, thanks to its very moderate recommended system requirements, which mention a lowly Nvidia GTX 970 as the recommended GPU for 60 fps gameplay at 1080p.
