GOD EATER is a successful game series from Japan that first launched on the PSP in 2010. Thanks to its popularity, an anime adaptation was later produced, releasing in 2015 and retelling the events of the first game. GOD EATER 2: Rage Burst is an expanded version of the second entry in the series and debuted in 2015. It takes players to a near-future world overrun by grotesque creatures called Aragami. The game focuses on intense monster hunts where players repeatedly face off against massive enemies, much like Capcom’s Monster Hunter series. Featuring a classic anime art style, Rage Burst, originally developed for the PlayStation Vita, doesn’t quite deliver visually on PC by today’s standards.
To ensure humanity’s survival, players step into the role of a "God Eater" – elite soldiers who wield special weapons known as "God Arcs." These living, adaptive weapons can shift between sword, gun and shield forms, and are crafted from the same cells as the monstrous Aragami they are designed to destroy. Rage Burst takes place three years after the events of the first game. A mysterious plague known as the "Black Death" is spreading and only a new unit, called "Blood," has the power to trace and fight its source. Compared to its predecessor, the story is darker and more personal, placing a greater emphasis on character development.
Gameplay centers on fast, action-packed battles against the overwhelming Aragami. Players take part in real-time combat either solo or in co-op mode with up to four others, where quick reflexes and smart tactics are crucial. The focus is on the God Arcs, which unlock new tactical options with the addition of weapon types like the Boost Hammer and the Charge Spear. A major new feature is the introduction of Blood Arts – special techniques that enhance attacks and give each fighting style a unique flair. Mastering these skills allows players to pull off powerful combos, which are especially valuable when facing tougher enemies. Beyond the main story, a variety of side missions offer valuable rewards, including new equipment, skills and team customization options.
Reviews: Large scope, little innovation
In a review by the German website PlayFront.de, GOD EATER 2: Rage Burst impressed with a story that stays true to the series’ roots while embracing familiar anime clichés, something that particularly resonates with fans. The game also earned praise for its expansive content. According to the PlayFront editorial team, the numerous additional missions make it easy to spend around 30 hours with the RPG. New weapons and gameplay features add welcome variety. Thanks to polished cutscenes, strong weapon design and smooth performance, the overall game experience was well received. The English voice acting, available as an alternative to the original Japanese voices, was also praised for its quality.
However, PlayFront’s testers were critical of the game’s lack of innovation, which may disappoint more experienced players. Rage Burst also fell short visually, with graphics that clearly reveal their handheld origins, featuring upscaled textures, jagged edges and sparsely detailed environments. The controls were noted to feel a bit clunky at times as well. Overall, PlayFront gave the game a score of 8.5 out of 10. On Metacritic, Rage Burst holds a Metascore of 73 and a User Score of 7.2. On Steam, the RPG has around 3,300 reviews with an overall positive rating of 80%.
