The Long Dark is a first-person survival game that plunges players into the frozen wilderness of northern Canada. It features both a story-driven campaign and an open-ended survival mode. In the story mode, called WINTERMUTE, you play as bush pilot Will Mackenzie. After a strange flash lights up the sky, his plane crashes deep in the Canadian wilds. Separated from his passenger, Dr. Astrid Greenwood, Mackenzie sets out on a dangerous search to find her. Along the way, he encounters abandoned settlements, desperate prisoners and mysterious signs of a looming disaster.
In survival mode, you're dropped into an open, frozen world without any set objectives. Your goal is simple: stay alive as long as you can by gathering resources, finding food and water, seeking shelter and fending off wild animals. The game offers a realistic survival experience, tracking body temperature, calorie intake, thirst, fatigue and changing weather. A permadeath system means every decision matters – if you die, your progress is lost. While the world itself isn’t randomly generated, the placement of resources and threats changes, keeping each playthrough fresh.
Reviews: Realistic survival game without zombies
In their review, the German website GamersGlobal.de praised The Long Dark for its realistic survival mechanics and its atmospheric, zombie-free natural setting, which stands out from the genre. The survival mode offers deep systems and rewards careful strategy, while the story mode provides an easier entry point for newcomers. Regular updates and expansions like Tales from the Far Territory add new content, including traders, cougars and house upgrades. Criticism, however, was directed at the steep learning curve without a real tutorial, outdated graphics, minor control issues, limited object interactions and the often harsh consequences of small mistakes.
The GamersGlobal team awarded The Long Dark a solid 7.5 out of 10. On Steam, the survival game has earned over 96,000 reviews with a "Very Positive" average rating of 91%. Over on Metacritic, the picture is a bit less glowing: critics gave it a Metascore of 77, while players rated it with a user score of 6.8.
