The Case X MacBook USB-C hub from Byrdbyte is currently for sale via a Kickstarter campaign. The six-port attachable laptop case is available in two models, with and without an optional SuperSpeed+ USB-C 3.1 Gen 2x2 SSD interface that can handle data transfers up to 4 TB at 1,000 Mbps. Both devices have USB-C cable storage, SD and microSD card readers and a 100 W USB-C port. Two USB-A ports are capable of data transfer speeds up to 10 Gbps, and a 4K HDMI port supports up to 60 fps.
The ‘stretch goal’ of the campaign is a Case X Pro with the same ports alongside a Thunderbolt 3 SSD capable of up to 4 TB at 2,600 Mbps. The Case X has built-in heat dissipation, ensuring that the gadget does not ger too hot. The slim design means that the device is only 1 cm (~0.4-in) thick and weighs 200 g (~7.0 oz) for the 13-in model or 220 g (~7.8 oz) for the 16-in model.
Byrdbyte suggests using the gadget’s external drive to smoothly run Windows using all of your MacBook Pro’s RAM. Plus, you can schedule automatic backups to reduce your risk of data loss. The gadget is compatible with 15-in MacBook Pro (2015 to 2019), 13-in MacBook Pro (2015 to 2020) and 16-in MacBook Pro (2019 to 2020) models.
You can currently buy the Case X without storage for US$99 or with 512 GB storage for US$199. Plus, you can opt to purchase additional storage up to 4 TB; the 4 TB upgrade via Case X costs US$500 and it would cost you $1,200 to buy the same storage directly from Apple.
