Biwin has launched its Mini SSD in China as an affordable storage expansion solution that comes in a size similar to a microSD card. As we have already detailed in our past coverage, the SSD supports the PCIe 4.0x2 interface and NVMe 1.4 protocol.
This interface support makes the Mini SSD offer a read speed of up to 3,700 MB/s and a write speed of up to 3,400 MB/s. These speeds are marginally higher than the performance-focused microSD cards, making Biwin's offering a better option in scenarios where high transfer speeds matter.
Of course, the relatively compact M.2 2230 SSDs can offer much higher transfer speeds (1 TB Crucial P310 curr. $79.80 on Amazon), but the Biwin Mini SSD has one notable advantage: it provides a plug-and-play experience. The microSD-like storage relies on a SIM tray-style slot, making the installation process as easy as inserting a SIM card.
Chinese manufacturers have already introduced devices that support the Biwin Mini SSD. The GPD Win 5, OneXPlayer Super X, and OneXPlayer X1 Air gaming handhelds are among the first, and Biwin expects that more manufacturers will introduce laptops, mini PCs, tablets, cameras, and NAS that support this storage solution.
The Biwin Mini SSD has been introduced in 2 TB, 1 TB, and 512 GB sizes. Among the three, the 512 GB one costs 399, around $56, while the 1 TB option goes for CNY 599, about $84. The company hasn't revealed the price of the 2 TB variant, and it's also unclear when Biwin will bring the SSD to the global market.
