Battlefield 6 generative AI claims resurface after new skin resembles Call of Duty artwork

Despite the shooter games being rivals, a new Battlefield 6 skin would seem appropriate in Call of Duty: Ghosts. Some fans suspect that an artist used a generative AI tool to create a copy of a ghastly mask. Machine learning may also be responsible for other recent Battlefield 6 DLC.
A Dice executive downplayed the role generative AI would play when creating Battlefield 6 assets. Even so, the military shooter has come under scrutiny for some suspect-looking DLC. The latest accusations involve a new skin that bears a striking resemblance to artwork from the 2013 Call of Duty: Ghosts.
ForeGhost1013 started a Reddit thread, where gamers debated whether the Objective Ace cosmetic was a copy. While other titles have ghostly masks, fans commented that even the smallest details are identical. Arguing that it’s plagiarism, Momentarmknm said, “Look at the teeth drips, look at the crack along the lower part, look at the mark at the top left, the split down the middle.”
It’s possible that an artist drew inspiration from Call of Duty: Ghosts and created a Battlefield 6 skin with many similarities. Another scenario is that an individual employed a generative AI tool, using prompts that include the Call of Duty game and skull masks. Options like Stable Diffusion rely on existing images for training, which can yield results that are all too recognizable.
Is EA using GenAI for for lucrative Battlefield 6 DLC?
The new skin controversy follows recent criticism about winter content with strange designs. In one case, a double-barreled assault rifle didn’t match any gear available in the game. After scanning for other evidence, players highlighted a weapon-sticker featuring a bear with an uneven number of claws. When not monitored, GenAI often constructs objects with no basis in reality.
Ironically, EA has restricted user-created content modeled after Call of Duty games. The powerful portal mode in Battlefield 6 led one gamer to upload a tribute to the Modern Warfare Shipment map. Its author received a warning for not following community guidelines, and the download was removed.
Ahead of the Battlefield 6 release date, Dice VP and General Manager Rebecka Coutaz commented on the studio’s approach to AI. She claimed that no machine-produced assets would ship in the retail version. That may have been true when the game debuted on October 10th. However, considering EA’s massive investment in the technology, developers could be taking shortcuts with DLC.
