Microsoft's AI upscaling feature, called Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR), will initially be available on Copilot+ AI PCs with Snapdragon X Elite processors only. It will also be available on a very small number of Windows games.

With the unveiling of new Copilot+ AI PCs, Microsoft has announced an auto AI upscaling feature for Windows games. It works on the operating system level and offers a boost in terms of performance. This feature, called Automatic Super Resolution, will also deliver better anti-aliasing even if the title doesn't support XeSS, DLSS, or FSR.

But at initial launch, the auto AI upscaler will only be available on "a curated set of games." The information on these titles is available on a site accessible at WorksOnWoA.com. Besides showing how well Windows games run on Snapdragon X series laptops, it reveals that 12 games are currently compatible with Auto SR.

Among them are some popular titles such as Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Resident Evil 2, and Borderlands 3. What's more important is the Auto Super Resolution for Windows games will only be available on Copilot+ AI PCs with Snapdragon X Elite processors at launch. So, both the Snapdragon X Plus and x86-based processors are being left out at the moment.

This move of limiting Auto SR to Snapdragon X Elite Copilot Plus laptops seems to be for promoting Microsoft's new high-end laptops (2024 Surface Pro 2-in-1 available on Amazon). But it's worth noting that the X Elite CPUs are currently touted to come with the "world's fastest NPU" that can deliver up to 45 TOPs of AI performance. This makes them meet the 40 TOPs requirement that Microsoft has set for the upscaling feature.

Of course, Intel and AMD are expected to launch Lunar Lake and Strix Point later this year, which will likely meet the Microsoft Copilot+ AI PC requirements. If they do, we may see more laptops being compatible with Automatic Super Resolution.
