Asus Zephyrus S15: Advantage gained by RTX 2070 Super only marginal

Only the new CPU can score points: Asus ROG Zephyrus S15 GX502L.
Only the new CPU can score points: Asus ROG Zephyrus S15 GX502L.
Above all, Asus achieves a shorter battery life with the Zephyrus S15's upgrade to current hardware. Despite the better CPU performance, the overall performance hardly has any noticeable effect on gaming performance.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus S15 GX502L went through our test with an Intel Core i7-10875H and 32 GB of RAM. A 1 TB SSD from Western Digital is used as storage medium, and image content is rendered on the 300 Hz panel by an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super. The display is a feast for the eyes when playing games and impresses with a very smooth image and strong colors.

The Intel Core i7-10875H achieves over 40% more multithread performance than the Intel Core i7-9750H, which was built into the predecessor model of the Zephyrus S15. Performance is also maintained by the cooling system over a long period of time without drops. In games, however, the graphics card is also important, and not much changes with the leap from Nvidia's GeForce RTX 2070 to the GeForce RTX 2070 Super here. The theoretical performance increase should be of up to 20% in games here, but it shrinks to a significantly lower value in the Asus ROG Zephyrus S15's configuration. In our The Witcher 3 test, for example, the frame rates are only slightly higher at 76 fps compared to 70 fps.

While a performance increase of even a few percent means a lot to some gamers, the use on battery power is also an important factor in a laptop. Due to the increased power consumption, the Zephyrus S15 only lasts for about three hours in our practical WLAN test. That's 40 minutes less than the previous model. However, the second 65-watt USB Type-C power adapter deserves a plus point, because it saves users who want to use their device on the go in office mode from having to take the large 240-watt power adapter with them.

For stationary gamers, it's worth it to go for the new edition of the Zephyrus S15, since its price is currently almost identical to the predecessor's one. But users who would like a little more battery life will get almost the same gaming performance with the previous model. More details about the Asus ROG Zephyrus S15 can be found in our review.
