The Asus ROG Ally X should officially become available in July, sending the original ROG Ally firmly into discount territory. With the latest Best Buy deal resulting in a $150 price drop, it starts to look like a mighty fine budget option, considering it has the exact same internals as the upcoming ROG Ally X.

The Asus ROG Ally has become something of a fan favourite for handheld gamers, despite some notable issues with the gaming handheld and the company that makes it. Now, ahead of the official launch — or end of the pre-order period — of the ROG Ally X, Best Buy has slashed the original Asus ROG Ally's price by $150, bringing the top-end AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme variant down to $549, down from $699 — although it could frequently be had on $100 discount.

In our review of the Asus ROG Ally, we found the handheld to perform admirably in most games, thanks to the AMD Radeon 780M iGPU, and the XG Mobile port is handy for increasing the GPU performance and expanding the limited ports selection.

This is the lowest price the Asus ROG Ally has ever sold for — now coming in at a whole $250 less than its upcoming successor — but it's worth mentioning that the ROG Ally X has a number of notable improvements over the original Ally, which may make it worth the wait and maybe even the extra cost.

While the ROG Ally X will have the same 7-inch, 120 Hz IPS touchscreen as its predecessor, it gets a RAM upgrade to 24 GB, which may result in a measurable performance uptick, given that RAM is shared between the CPU and iGPU. It will also feature an additional USB type-C port, making it far more competitive with the likes of the Lenovo Legion Go.

To wit, the Lenovo Legion Go also recently saw a price drop, putting it at $629.99 on Lenovo US — only $80.99 more than the discounted Asus ROG Ally. Given they have the same processor and RAM configuration, the Legion Go might also be worth considering for those looking for a larger screen, extra USB type-C port, and detachable controllers with extra features.
