Deal | Asus ROG Ally X: Top-rated Z1 Extreme gaming handheld hits record low price before Christmas

Christmas is around the corner, and a good number of top-rated products have already received generous discounts. The Asus ROG Ally X is one of them, and as a part of holiday deals, the gaming handheld is now enjoying a special discount, dropping to its record low price.

More specifically, the ROG Ally X has dropped to $699.99 on Best Buy, which is the all-time low price. Of course, even with a $100 discount, this discounted price tag still makes it one of the most expensive last-gen gaming handhelds out there, and you should also note that the Ryzen Z2 series is around the corner.

To fill you in, the ROG Ally X features the Ryzen Z1 Extreme, and AMD is expected to unveil the Z2 series at the CES 2025 event. The top-end option of this new Zen 5 gaming handheld APU series is expected to feature the Radeon 890M, which we found to offer up to 18 percent better performance over the Radeon 780M in our gaming tests.

Of course, there's a high chance that the upcoming gaming handhelds with the Ryzen Z2 Extreme will cost similar to or even higher than the regular price of the ROG Ally X. The prices of the competing Lunar Lake-powered MSI Claw models are a good baseline in this regard, with the most affordable option in the lineup starting at $799.

However, it's worth noting that the ROG Ally X is as good as it gets when compared to the other Ryzen Z1 Extreme gaming handhelds. In our test, we found it to offer around 8 percent better performance over the non-X model, which mostly became possible thanks to the specific tuning to the APU and 24 GB of RAM.

Other highlights of the Asus ROG Ally X include a large 80 Wh battery, a more ergonomic design than the non-X, two USB4 ports, and support for a standard 2280 M.2 SSD. Check out our review video attached below to learn more about the gaming handheld.
