The Asus N53J is something of a curate's egg; it's stylish, well built and powerful, with a superb spec - on paper. The keyboard, screen and battery life let it down and they're rather fundamental issues for a system at this price. But the sound quality is beaten only by the Dell XPS 15 (or Asus’s own upcoming NX90) and this is still an excellent multimedia notebook in many ways. If you're not planning to travel with the N53 and you watch movies more than you type, you may still find you're getting excellent bang for the buck.

Fantastic audio, matched by decent specifications, makes this a great multimedia choice. Let down by poor battery life and the steep price.

The audio produced by most laptop speakers is pretty dire, but Asus' latest entertainment laptop, the N53Jn, is looking to change all that. It comes with an audio system that's been designed in partnership with Hi-Fi brand Bang & Olufsen. The Asus N53Jn is a great-looking laptop with an excellent sound system but, for an entertainment-focused device, its 15.6-inch screen is a little disappointing.

The Bang & Olufsen ICEpower speakers deliver handsomely on their promise, and the N53JN lacks little for performance or features, but a mediocre display is a real let down.

We really liked the combination of a powerful Intel processor with 4GB of RAM and a powerful video card. This trio gives you ultimate performance from a laptop and especially from a 15.6-inch laptop as opposed to larger notebooks with 17-inch displays. The 750GB hard drive is of the speedy 7200RPM type, which means you get lots of storage space that's also readily accessible for smooth performance. The Nvidia GT 540M video card allows you to play today's demanding 3D video games with ease and the Asus N53SV does just that. You definitely won't be let down in the performance category with this notebook and that makes it well-worth the moderately-priced price tag. Asus does include a lot of their customized software on this laptop, but they do give you some pretty handy programs too, like a Live Update application to make sure your computer's drivers are always up-to-date. They also pre-install Microsoft Office 2010 Starter Edition, which is an ad-supported version of Word and Excel.

Asus bundles some nice software to take care of the peripherals: Cyberlink's PowerDVD for playing DVD movies, Power2Go for disc-burning chores, PowerDirector for making movies, and MediaEspresso for converting videos and music between various device formats. You may also boot the N53SV to the Asus Express Gate Cloud--a Linux-based interface that provides quick access to photos, a calendar, the Internet, and so on. However, the N53SV boots to Windows 7 so quickly, you might find yourself not bothering. The NV53SV has some excellent features. The price-to-performance ratio is nice, and it's never been whacked with an ugly stick. If the minor keyboard issues don't bother you, it's worth a look.

Look at the Asus N53SN's spec sheet and its price tag, and your first thought will probably be 'what's the catch. The 15.6-inch Asus N53SN is a very capable laptop, thanks to its powerful chip and graphics card. Its design leaves something to be desired, but this machine's worth a look if you want plenty of grunt at an affordable price.

The short and sweet of it is this; the ASUS N53 is an excellent, do-anything desktop replacement. It’s not the best at anything, but it’s very good at everything, and it’s the perfect choice for a user who demands versatility.

The N53SN is all about multimedia performance and in order to get the best, it is packing some of the latest hardware. For starters, we have Intel's latest SandyBridge CPU, the Core i7 2630QM which is a quad core multithreaded CPU running at 2.0GHz with Turbo upto 2.9GHz. The other big addition is the new Nvidia GT 550M with Nvidia Optimus and 2GB GDDR3 dedicated memory. The rest of the system specifications include 4GB RAM, 750GB 7200rpm drive, full HD 15.6-inch screen and finally a BluRay combo drive. Let's see how all this translates in the real world tests.

A versatile machine that handles gaming, multimedia and productivity tasks equally well, the Asus N53SV offers excellent value and decent build quality. Its looks err on the serious side a bit more than is strictly necessary, but its design remains cohesive resulting in a good-looking laptop. The screen's nothing special, but the rest of what's on show makes this mid-range laptop a highly attractive buy.

Our expectations for a near-$1,000 laptop have risen. The Asus N53SM-DS71 isn't lavish with features such as WiDi, and it's a little portly compared to some competitors—particularly our desktop replacement Editors' Choice Samsung Series 7 (NP700Z5A-S03), which packs everything from a high-res screen to a backlit keyboard and hybrid hard drive into an elegantly slim, MacBook Pro-style chassis. But it offers powerful performance, along with an above-average keyboard and sound. If you're looking for a productivity and video editing solution, it deserves a look.

Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. is a major Taiwanese computer hardware manufacturer based in Taipei, founded in 1989. Under the Asus brand name, the company manufactures a wide range of products, including laptops, desktops, motherboards, graphics cards, monitors, smartphones and networking equipment, complete systems and PC components for end users.
Under the ROG (Republic of Gamers) brand name, ASUS manufactures gaming laptops known by gamers for their powerful specifications, dedicated graphics cards, high refresh rate displays and advanced cooling systems.
Beyond gaming, a wide range of notebooks are offered for different needs and budgets, from ultra-slim and lightweight ultrabooks to versatile 2-in-1 convertibles and budget-friendly options. In 2023, Asus had a 7% global market share of the PC market.
Customer satisfaction with ASUS notebooks concerns performance, the features, and the good price-performance ratio of ASUS notebooks. However, as with any brand, there are occasional reports of problems such as overheating, driver compatibility, or build quality issues.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 335M: The GeForce GT 335M offers 72 shader cores (compared to the 48 of the GT 330M) and is based on the GT215 core (GTS 350M).
NVIDIA GeForce GT 425M: Successor of the GeForce GT 335M featuring DirectX 11 support and based on the GF108 chip.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M:
Mid-range graphics card based on the GT 435M chip (GF108) with higher clock rates and DDR3 support.
AMD Radeon HD 6650M: Successor of the Mobility Radeon HD 5650 with more cores, UVD3 processor and Eyefinity+. Due to the same codename, the 6650M should be a HD 6750M with slow DDR3 memory.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 550M:
Performance-level graphics card for laptops based on the old 400M series but with support for DDR3 at 900MHz.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M:
Multiple models based on various chips of the Fermi generation. Specifically, the GT 630M exists in GF108/GF106/GF116 variants, but are all essentially renamed GeForce GT 540M or 555M GPUs. A 28nm GF117 variant exists as well with reduced power consumption.
AMD Radeon HD 6750M:
Essentially a renamed Radeon HD 6650M but with faster GDDR5 memory.

Intel Core i5:
520M:
The Core i5-520M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-640M) and clocks between 2.4-2.93 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD 3150) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
450M: Should be similar to the Core i5-520M but without AES functions.
2410M:
Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. The CPU is clocked at 2.3 GHz (Turbo Boost 2.6-2.9 GHz) and the GPU at 650 (1200 MHz Turbo).
2520M: Dual-core Sandy Bridge processor with integrated graphics and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
720QM: The Core i7-720QM is the slowes Core i7 Quad Core in 2009 and clocks between 1.6 and 2.8 GHz (due to the Turbo Mode). Therefore, it combines the advantages of a slow quad core CPU with a fast single core one. Compared to the faster Core i7 mobile CPUs, the 720QM only features 6MB L3 Cache.
2720QM: Fast Quad-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.
2630QM: Fast Quad-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.
2670QM: Fast Quad-core processor clocked at 2.2-3.1 GHz based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.
AMD Phenom II X4:
P960: Slow clocked quad core CPU for mid size laptops (due to the 25 W TDP). Single threaded applications and games suffer from the low core speed.
AMD AMD A-Series:
A8-3520M:
Llano quad-core APU clocked at 1.6-2.5 GHz (Turbo Core) featuring an integrated Radeon 6620G (400 cores, 400MHz) graphics card.

2.7 kg:
With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.

77.6%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
