An alternative operating system is intended to breathe life into older smartwatches. A new version is now available and adds new features and comes with a mix of major and minor changes.

Back in 2018, we reported on AsteroidOS, an alternative operating system for a wide range of smartwatches. AsteroidOS is now available in version 2.0, and this new release brings numerous improvements and support for additional wearables.

To be more exact, the OS now includes various features that are standard on smartwatches. For example, there is now an always-on display option. The display can also be turned on or off with a wrist gesture and music playback can be controlled. AsteroidOS 2.0 further adds a new quick access bar that can also be customized. For viewing apps in a launcher, there are now seven new styles, providing more options. The software also sports new wallpapers and additional customization options. There are design changes to the weather app and the timer, and 20 new languages are supported. Battery life and rendering have also been improved.

AsteroidOS 2.0 cannot be used with all smartwatches, but compared with AsteroidOS 1.0, compatibility has been significantly expanded. For example, Fossil Gen 4, Gen 5 and Gen 6 smartwatches, the Polar M600 and various TicWatch models are now compatible. There is also limited compatibility with certain Samsung watches. Detailed instructions are available for the supported smartwatches, but using AsteroidOS, even in version 2.0, is generally not suitable for beginners. Depending on the device, there are even reports of bricked smartwatches that have been rendered entirely unusable.
