Over the past few years, Apple has been in a race with Google's Android and Microsoft's Windows 11 to develop new software features for the iPhone and the Mac before they become available on competing products. Ranging from the brand-new "Liquid Glass" look to numerous Apple Intelligence AI features, iOS 26 and macOS 26 have introduced comprehensive innovations.
According to the latest information from Bloomberg, iOS 27 and macOS 27 are expected to introduce very few new features next year. Instead, Apple is said to be pursuing a similar to that of macOS 10.6 Snow Leopard, focusing on improving performance and fixing bugs. Under the hood, the updates are expected to be significant, as Apple is reportedly removing older, obsolete code, cleaning up system files and rewriting significant portions of the code to make the operating systems faster, more stable and more efficient.
These improvements are intended to fix widespread problems that can cause iPhones or Macs to overheat and reduce battery life, cause animations to appear jerky, or cause apps to crash. iOS 27 and macOS 27 are also expected to lay the groundwork for foldable displays and new AI innovations. Bloomberg editor Mark Gurman expects two significant new AI features in particular: a web search that will compete with Perplexity AI, and an AI assistant in the form of Apple Health, which will only be available with a paid Health+ subscription.
