Apple Vision Pro reduces surgery times by up to 20%

A new peer-reviewed study from UC San Diego's Shiley Eye Institute suggests Apple's Vision Pro headset could speed up certain surgical procedures. Researchers focused on 32 endoscopic tear-duct operations, comparing 16 procedures performed with the Vision Pro against 16 using a standard display. Surgeons wearing the headset completed operations in an average of 34.4 minutes, compared with 42.7 minutes for the traditional setup, representing a roughly 19% reduction in operating time.
All five surgeons involved said they preferred the headset, reporting lower physical and mental workload, largely because they could keep a forward-facing posture rather than having to repeatedly turn to a wall-mounted screen. All operations in both groups succeeded without complications, so the difference lay in speed and comfort rather than surgical outcomes. Researchers also estimate up to $420 in cost savings per procedure based on operating-room time, further noting that the headset took up a fraction of the space of a typical display setup.
While the headset remains an expensive consumer product (starting at $3,499), the study suggests that it may bring added value to the medical industry. However, the results are preliminary: the trial was small, conducted at a single academic center, focused on one procedure type, and was not randomized, meaning that factors such as surgeon experience may have influenced outcomes. Larger, controlled studies are needed before drawing firmer conclusions about the Vision Pro's broader surgical potential.
