Android 11 on the Xiaomi Mi A1 via crDroid: Probably the best ROM for this handset so far

Without any noticeable problems on my handset after a few days of use, Android 11-based crDroid 7.2 proves to be an almost perfect choice for those who want to keep around the Xiaomi Mi A1 for at least another year or two without making any compromises in terms of security and capabilities.

After last week's quite impressive Android 11-based POSP ROM, which still needs some polishing, today the time has come to write down my thoughts about the few days that I spent using the excellent crDroid 7.2 ROM

Although it is based on Android 11 as well, crDroid comes without Google's apps included. Some might consider this a weak spot, but I think this gives more flexibility to the user, who can simply choose to forget about Google's ecosystem or install Gapps and only pick the essentials, thus ending up with a lighter system overall. In my case, I chose to keep everything as light as possible, so I only got Google Play and Google Photos.

The result of the decision mentioned above is an incredible autonomy (4 days since last charge, over 4 hours of SoT, this with a battery that barely holds 1,000 mAh when full, but with GPS, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi turned on). The battery level is now at 17% and I am listening to lossless music tracks on the UGREEN HiTune TWS which sound impressive thanks to the AudioFX app that comes baked into the ROM, although version 2.2.0 has been around since 2017 (may CyanogenMod rest in peace, its legacy lives on).

Compared to POSP, crDroid is customizable to a whole new level (the images and the video below should be more than enough to give you an idea of what can be done), comes with all the other positive parts that I mentioned for that ROM, and I don't think that I can name any negatives. However, those who want something negative could add the default camera app (I had major focus problems with it), the lack of included Google apps and services in the ROM, as well as the fact that crDroid also fails the SafetyNet attestation. Oh, and if anyone really cares about this part, they should know that the boot animation looks great.

As usual, here you have a few screenshots and a hands-on video that does not show crDroid out-of-the-box, but what I turned it into after a few days of use. The comments section is all yours, so please let me know which ROM should I try next. For now, I think that there's no need to look for perfection anywhere else: crDroid 7.2 is the Android 11-based ROM that anyone who owns the venerable Xiaomi Mi A1 in 2021 should get their hands on.
