Despite some small drawbacks, you just won't find a tablet with these features and performance at this price.

The Fire HD 8 is one of the least compromised budget tablets out there – but that doesn’t mean there aren’t compromises to be made.

Amazon is doing really well in tablets as they don’t really need to make a profit on them. They view the tablet platform as an on-ramp to their other products and services like books, video, games, store items, apps, music, audiobooks, and magazines. This order of goods is exactly how their UI is laid out, too, which reinforces this position.

The Amazon Fire HD 8 is a “good enough” tablet at a great price, making it easy to recommend if £100 is your absolute maximum budget. Its screen is fair, the build quality is fine and there’s plenty of storage. While it doesn’t feel incredibly fast, it has enough power to do justice to some of Android’s most impressive games.

Like the 7in Amazon Fire tablet before it, the HD 8 does a great job of not being a frustrating, terrible experience for just £90. Is it fantastic? No. But it’s a tablet for £90 that isn’t terrible, which is an achievement in and of itself.

But Amazon's tablet wasn't designed for business use. The slate's biggest downside is its limited app library, which is missing such key offerings as Microsoft Word and Excel. Other than that, you get what you pay for: decent (but not fast) performance, a bright (but dull) display and a plastic design that feels sturdy but probably isn't as durable as what you get with a pricier tablet. Despite those limitations, this $90 slate is hard to beat for the price.

The Fire HD 8 is evidence cheap tablets aren’ t progressing as fast as cheap phones. It is basic. However, it is also very affordable and can handle games and apps very well given the price. Not perfect, but the best you can get at the price.

Despite its shortfalls, Amazon’s latest Fire HD 8 tablet is quite the tablet. At just £90 for the basic 16GB version, its excellent battery life, superb build quality and decent performance make it a great choice for those looking to save a bit of money, and it’s a particularly good choice for kids. It has its shortcomings, but at this price, you’d be hard-pushed to find a better value Android tablet for less. It wins a Recommended award.

If you’re after a simple and affordable family tablet boasting fast access to all of your Amazon Prime content, then the All-New Fire HD 8 tablet is a worthy purchase. The hardware is basic but backed up by lots of great software features, and the sub-£100 price point makes it easy on the wallet.

The latest Fire HD 8 delivers faster performance, a bigger battery and more base storage than the previous version for almost half the price. Its 8-inch screen is bright, the speakers are loud and it offers expandable microSD storage and ample parental controls. Amazon Prime members can access gobs of free video, music and other content with their subscription. Display isn't as sharp as that of current iPad Mini models; to truly take advantage of what the tablet has to offer, you need an Amazon Prime membership; slow charging (takes 6 hours to fully cap battery).

The Amazon Fire HD 8 ticks a lot of the right boxes. It’s affordable, well built and plays back video to an exceptionally high standard. But we’ll say it again – you need Amazon Prime to fully enjoy it. It’s not that it is a complete necessity, but the prominence in the operating system of Amazon’s own apps and services means without a Prime membership it’s a frustrating user experience. This caveat aside, it’s an incredibly priced media consumption tablet that exemplifies Amazon’s place in the low-end market – this over makes it an attractive, interestingly unique option.

The smaller Amazon Fire tablet, at $49.99, is practically an impulse buy. That's a big part of why we give it four stars and our Editors' Choice award. The Fire HD 8, at $89.99, takes a little more thought. It's an inexpensive tablet for consuming media, especially Amazon media, and that can be enough. My daughter, for example, has a tablet she uses exclusively for listening to music, playing Minecraft, looking things up on Wikipedia, and watching Steven Universe on Hulu—and the Fire HD 8 does all of those things. I just hope she doesn't ask for Marvel Unlimited.

Model: It is amazing how Amazon updates its range of Kindle Fire tablets and succeeds in pushing its prices lower at the same time. The previous generation Fire HD 8 started at $150 compared to its new price of $90. It is clear that Amazon intends to lure more users into this vast Amazon ecosystem by making the prices of its tablets more attractive. Although there is no significant revamp on its exterior, the 2016 Amazon Fire HD 8 inch gets some significant upgrades on its performance. It is powered with a new 1.3 GHz quad-core processor chip with the real boost coming from an increase in RAM from 1 GB to 1.5 GB. Amazon also claims that it comes with a larger battery which is capable of up to 12 hours of mixed use. Another key feature of the Fire tablets (which will be rolled out in coming months) is Alexa, the cloud-based voice service that is similar to Apple's Siri. Voice commands are enabled to tell Alexa to play music, launch games, read audio books, and deliver weather reports.
Its stereo speakers are tuned with Dolby audio and the sound is loud and decent. Although its 8-inch widescreen HD display with 1280 x 800 pixel (189 ppi) resolution ranks below that of the iPad Mini 2's 2048 x 1536 pixel resolution (326 ppi), this cannot be regarded as a drawback as the latter costs three times as much. In fact, the Amazon Fire HD is mainly made for reading E-Books which doesn't require very high screen resolution. Its dimensions measure at 21.35 x 12.7 x 1.02 cm (8.4 x 5.0 x 0.4 inch) and it weighs 341 g. It is light enough to be held up for reading without straining the hands of the user. Amazon also says the Fire HD 8 is twice as durable as the iPad Mini 4, as measured in tumble tests. Storage options are either 16 GB or 32 GB with support for up to 200 GB of expandable storage via a microSD card. It also comes with free, unlimited cloud storage for all photos taken on Fire devices.
It comes with a VGA Front-facing camera as well as a 2 MP rear-facing camera with 720p HD video recording. The Amazon Fire HD 8 inch 2016 comes in four color variants, i.e. black, magenta, blue and tangerine. Many may find themselves constrained by the Fire OS which aims to maximize users’ exposure to the Amazon environment. Such a gripe is unjustified as Amazon-exclusive features (such as ASAP, X-Ray, Second Screen, Family Library, Amazon FreeTime, Prime Video downloads, Blue Shade, and Word Runner) will be available to users. Prime membership grants users access to a lot of "free" content, including plenty of music, movies, games, books and apps. In all, the 2016 HD 8 is truly a great value for those who don't really need an expensive iPad or Android tablet and require a tablet mainly for reading digital media.

This display format is in the mid-range for smartphones. It offers a compromise between good visibility, details and resolution on the screen, and you can still fit it into trouser pockets.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.Amazon: Amazon is a company that is mainly known as an online retailer, but it also has its own product line called AmazonBasics. This product line includes a wide variety of products, including electronics, housewares, office supplies, sports and leisure items, and more. Amazon also works with other manufacturers to offer products under the "Amazon's Choice" brand, which are recommended by Amazon based on their reviews and popularity.
74.84%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
