According to a new report by Ming Chi-Kuo, Apple might only start their production ramp-up for the AirPods 3 by Q3 2021. This would most likely make a March 23rd release timeframe - something earlier rumors hinted at - less viable.
The report also indicated that Apple's US$549 AirPods Max over-ear earphones weren't moving high volume, accounting for barely 1 percent of all AirPods shipments this year. Moreover, the report noted a decline in Apple AirPods sales volume this year, compared to last year. This is likely on account of strong competition from earphones like the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2, as well as more affordable alternatives.
Kuo hinted at two possible courses of action in front of Apple: Cupertino might either choose to EOL (end-of-life) the AirPods 2 when the AirPods 3 come out, or they could keep the AirPods 2 around as a lower-priced alternative. If this was to happen, AirPods 3 sales might be adversely affected, though Apple would likely ship a higher volume of TWS buds overall. Will the AirPods 3 come out on March 23rd? Or are looking at a months-long wait for these buds. We'll update you as soon as we learn more.
