Adobe Photoshop beta has gained AI tools like Harmonize, Generative Upscale, and improved object removal to simplify photo compositing and editing. The AI features are powered by the company's Firefly generative image models.

Adobe has added new artificial intelligence features to the beta version of its Photoshop image editor software. The features can make it easier for photo editors to remove objects, upscale images, and make composites. Interested readers must first join the beta program as described here to access these features.

Harmonize (beta) emerged from Project Perfect Blend, which was first demonstrated in 2024, and leverages generative AI to adjust the color, lighting, shadows, and tone of new objects added to an image to make them fit in better without tedious image editing, according to Adobe. When the feature is used on an object, a set of composited looks is presented to choose from.

Generative Upscale (beta) leverages the ability of AI to fill in details when upscaling low-resolution, low-quality images up to eight megapixels, similar to the AI software from Topaz Labs for upscaling photos and videos. The recreated details are not real and should not be expected to match actual details for critical research or investigative work.

The Remove tool has been updated to better erase selected objects from images. It leverages the Adobe Firefly Image Model detailed in this PDF document to fill in the areas left empty with appropriate matching backgrounds.

In addition, users are given the ability to select the Firefly Image Model to be used with the existing Generative Fill and Generative Expand tools to better match the AI output with the image being edited. Projects (beta) has been added as a feature that organizes all the files related to a project for easier access and sharing.

Readers can learn to use Adobe Photoshop by purchasing a subscription and reading this book.
