Adobe's has rolled out a new feature for the Camera Raw plug-in called Reflection Removal. As the name suggests, it can clean up reflections on photos taken through large plate glass windows that cover the field of view.
The company says the feature is AI-based, but isn't Generative AI. It's a fine-tuned model for one specific task. It has a few limitations. It cannot remove reflections from "windows that are small or far away," or in situations where the window frame is within view. It also cannot remove reflections "from objects like wine glasses, car bodies, or clouds reflected in a lake."
The model identifies and separates the reflection from the image and then simulates a clean image without one. Adobe trained the model by using photos of objects without a reflection and adding "pairs of them together to form millions of simulated photographs that appear to be polluted by reflections." The model then learns to separate them into two.
The feature only works on raw photos and is available within the Technology Previews section in the Camera Raw plug-in. Adobe says since the model isn't Generative AI, "it will never create objects that weren't present in the original photograph."
