If Acer's original 14-inch 'Style Edition' Predator Triton didn't quite deliver on scale or power, then the Predator Triton 500 SE is here to up the ante. It's got a bigger, brighter and meaner screen, plus power options that are far more considerable - but then so is the price tag, so you'll need to get saving. The design - pretty much pitched as 'gaming laptop for the business person' - is more discreet than your gaming laptop average, but there's still all the RGB lighting, cooling vents, ports and Turbo overclocking that you could want. It's good to see something a bit different to diversify the gaming laptop and creators market. Although, as we said of the original SE model, the 500 SE ought to up its game when it comes to screen sturdiness - especially at this price point.

The Acer Predator Triton 500 SE, there is a lot to like about this laptop. Clean and professional aesthetics, lots of high-performance ports, and a beautiful 16-inch display. I know the 12th gen is here but for gaming, it doesn’t really have that much difference when compared to the 11th gen. If I were to complain, I would pick on why they would pick the Core i9 and RTX 3080 110W. It makes the laptop more expensive for a small margin of performance. This laptop is best to go with i7 and RTX 3070 even if it is 110W. RM12,999 for i9 and 3080 is only for those who have extra to spare.

The Acer Predator Triton 500 SE is a solid do-it-all laptop but it's not the best overall gaming laptop in terms of performance and thermal management. Although it nails the basics, it's hard to recommend a product designed for gamers that drops the ball in these areas. Gamers need the best bang-for-the-buck for performance but also require good thermal management for long gaming sessions. It’s competition does better in those respects. However, there is a place for this laptop. If you dabble in gaming but perhaps do more photo or video editing, or are coding, this may be the right one for you. The Triton is relatively thin and light for a gaming laptop, making it easy to carry with you for everyday tasks and the occasional mobile gaming session It has an understated design that doesn’t stand out too much at work or at school, if that’s a concern. Its keyboard is nice to type on, and has a large, bright, high-res screen so coders and writers alike will find this pleasant to use for long work sessions.

Nonetheless, the 3060 (starting at $1749) and 3070 (starting at $1999) configurations are arguably the better value and where most people should end up shopping, so we’ll have to see how competitive this Triton 500 SE ends up once available in stores. Based on past experience and the little data available so far, I’d expect it to be aggressively priced in most regions. Anyway, that’s about it for now with this preview of the Acer Predator Triton 500 SE PT516-51s. For everything that’s on offer, the Predator Triton 500 SE is both a remarkable value and impressive balancing act. Gaming laptops with high refresh rates tend not to come in 16:10 aspect ratios, and the one notable exception—Dell’s XPS 17 9710—has both a standard 60Hz display refresh rate and a higher price ($2,099, when similarly equipped) to boot. While the Triton is by no means inexpensive at $1,750, it’s a reasonable ask for its combination of portable gaming and productivity on an ultra-smooth screen. Best of all, you might not even be embarrassed to be spotted with it.

Despite the slight heating issues with this laptop, we have to say, that it singlehandedly destroys every mobile device that we have tested. Its computational performance is simply unmatched. Yes, we are yet to test more Alder Lake CPUs, as well as Zen 3+ devices from AMD, but a performance increase of 15-30% is definitely something worth talking about. Finally, there is the design. This incredibly powerful gaming/productivity laptop looks like a sleek business machine. We absolutely love that! And the fact that it has a good metal build is only adding to our satisfaction. On the other hand, if you are a gamer, you won’t be impressed by the keyboard, which is good for typing, but not the best for playing shooters, or racing games. Indeed, you can’t have the best of both worlds without compromises. We feel that some of them are justified, while others could have definitely been avoided. Without a doubt, though, the star of the show is the new Core i7-12700H. It not only provides an unmatched performance (as of the time of writing this review) but also helps with the battery life.

But it’s still not worth the price premium, especially with how loud the fans are, especially with new graphics cards coming soon, and especially when the RTX 3070 Ti laptops get you 80 percent of the performance for almost $1,000 less. However, with Nvidia’s new 40-series GPUs on the horizon, the pricing for many gaming laptops equipped with 30-series GPUs may cool down significantly.

It’s true that the Acer Predator Triton 500 SE is a step behind competing gaming laptops with higher-wattage RTX 3080 Ti GPUs, namely the MSI GE76 Raider and Razer Blade 17. These competing models, however, cost $1,000 or more than the Predator Triton 500 SE, making it a great value at its price of $3,000. The Triton extends its value and versatility by using a 16-inch, 16:10 display. The MSI and Razer models feature larger, 17.3-inch displays that make them more likely to stay anchored to a desk than as an everyday laptop. While the Triton is certainly not the most compact laptop, it remains fairly portable while providing ample screen real estate that won’t cramp your style or multitasking ways. It’s overqualified to be a productivity laptop that moonlights as a gaming system, but a strong argument can be made that it delivers great value as a gaming laptop that can also be used at school or in the office.

Acer: The company was founded under the name of Multitech in Taiwan in 1976 and renamed to Acer or Acer Group in 1987. The product range includes, for example, laptops, tablets, smartphones, desktops, monitors and televisions. Gateway Inc. and Packard Bell also belong to the Group and sell their own laptops.

While Acer still had the third largest global market share in the notebook segment in 2008, it ranked 6th in 2016 with a market share of 6% after they had continuously lost market shares.

There are dozens of Acer laptop reviews per month, the ratings are average (as of 2016). Gateway, which has an own laptop line-up, has also belonged to the Acer Group since 2007.

i7-11800H: Tiger Lake (H45 series) based high end octa-core SoC for gaming laptops and workstations. The eight CPU cores run at 2.3 GHz to 4.6 GHz. The integrated UHD Graphics GPU offers 32 EUs at up to 1.45 GHz. The chip is manufactured on the second-gen 10 nm Intel SuperFin process.

i9-11900H: Tiger Lake (H45 series) based high end octa-core SoC for gaming laptops and workstations. The eight CPU cores clock with 2.5 - 4.9 GHz. The integrated UHD Graphics GPU offers 32 cores at up to 1.45 GHz. The chip is manufactured in the 10nm SuperFin (improved 10nm) process.

Intel Alder Lake-S:

i7-12700H: On Alder-Lake based mobile CPU with 6 performance cores and 8 efficient cores. The performance cores offer hyper threading, leading to 20 threads that can be processed. The CPU clocks from 1.7 to 4.7 GHz and supports vPro.

Intel Alder Lake-P:

i9-12900H: On Alder-Lake based mobile CPU with 6 performance cores and 8 efficient cores. The performance cores offer hyper threading, leading to 20 threads that can be processed. The CPU clocks from 1.8 to 5 GHz and supports vPro.
