If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The most striking feature of the Alienware X17 R1 was that it managed to squeeze some seriously powerful gaming hardware and a bright, colourful 17.3-inch display into a stylish and slim design. This year's R2 update doesn't mess with that winning formula - it's essentially a speed-bump that adopts 12th-gen Intel processors, and the latest Nvidia GPUs. It's not completely perfect - the HD display (1920 x 1080) provided with our review unit is disappointing given the X17's high price tag, even if it does offer a rock-steady 360Hz refresh rate. The limited battery life also means that this is a laptop that's not going to stray too far from the nearest power socket. Even so, the sleek design, strong performance and big, bright display of the X17 make it a tempting option for any serious gamer.

The Alienware X17 R2 (AWX17R2-7341WHT-PUS) is a high-end gaming laptop that packs top-end intel and Nvidia components in the nicest-looking gaming laptops in the market, then adds an impressive mechanical keyboard option that feels great.

Some of those missing features are no surprise when you consider that the x17 isn’t a work notebook, but its sheer performance levels mean it’s still worthwhile if you need productivity power. And, alongside the muscular internals, it’s got plenty of ports, a great keyboard and a rock-solid exterior. There are inevitable downsides, though. The x17 is significantly heavier than both rivals, and they have better battery life and screens. The Asus offers its innovative Dial and better connectivity for £1,666 exc VAT, while the XPS 17 costs £2,332 exc VAT for a specification that approximately matches the x17. That said, the Alienware x17 R2 is worth the extra outlay if you want extreme performance inside a sturdy, port-packed laptop – just remember that you may get more looks than usual in the office.

The Alienware x17 R2 delivers stunning gaming and processing speeds, a top-notch screen and a sturdy, good-looking chassis, and it’s only hindered by an expected high price and unsurprisingly poor battery life. It’s one of the best 17.3in gaming notebooks on the market today.

Does the Alder-Lake x17 R2 displace the Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 as our recommendation for the Ultimate Gaming Laptop? It does. The massive range of specification options, the stunning looks and the effortlessly cool and quiet performance make it impossible not to recommend and outweigh the terrible battery life and excessive adherence to the Alienware orthodoxy of putting all the data ports at the back. The cheapest models are best avoided – a Full HD 165Hz panel is a bit too low end for a machine of this class and the RTX 3060 only comes with 6GB of vRAM – so make sure you go for the 360Hz panel with either the RTX 3070 Ti or 3080 Ti GPU. Do that and you’ll have the finest large-screen gaming laptop on the market, albeit at a price.

Overall, the Alienware x17 R2 is the most powerful laptop we’ve ever tested at L&B Tech Reviews. By its very nature, it’s a record that’s certain to be broken in the future. But I don’t expect that to happen in 2022. However, the x17 R2 is also close to the price record, being one of the most expensive laptops we’ve tested to date. So you can afford to set expectations sky-high. If you’re a professional gamer needing to travel with your e-sports (or just very wealthy), it could be the tool you need. The huge computing power could potentially be interesting for graphic designers and other creative professionals, but they will miss a more high-resolution and accurate screen. But such a screen can of course be bought as an accessory. After all, there’s room for as many as three external monitors.

Model:
Alienware x17 R2 is an ultra-thin gaming laptop that tries to strike a careful balance between performance, noise, and power consumption. Compared to its predecessor, the Alienware x17 R2 replaced the 11th Gen Tiger Lake-H and RTX 3070/3080 options respectively with 2th Gen Intel Alder Lake-P CPUs and GeForce RTX 3070/3080 Ti graphics. Besides that, it includes faster memory (DDR4-3466 to DDR5-4800), updated display options, support for MUX and advanced optimizations. For design, although advertised as an ultra-thin gaming laptop, the Alienware x17 R2 chassis is still noticeably heavier and larger than many other laptops in the market. In return, the Alienware system is able to carry a more powerful 175-watt GPU, while most other ultra-thin gaming notebooks are limited to 140 watts or less.
Thanks to its very high TGP target of 175W, the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti GPU graphics performance is one of the fastest of any gaming laptop. It is worth noting that graphics performance will be slower if running in balanced mode instead of max fan mode. The graphics processor is paired with Intel Core i9-12900HK, 32GB DDR5 RAM and is able to support up to 2TB SSD storage. As for display, the IPS panel with 16:9 ratio and a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixel meets nearly all typical requirements, including a fast 360 Hz refresh rate, fast black-and-white and grayscale response times, and full sRGB coverage for gaming and most graphics editing. One of the most important features of high performance gaming laptops has to be cooling technology. The Alienware x17 R2 comes with Advanced Alienware Cryo-tech for cooling, which is an electrical and mechanical engineering approach that maintains system stability when the hardwares is operating at high performance. The approach implements quad fan technology, unique power states and Element 31, which is an Alienware-exclusive gallium-silicone thermal interface material.
For power, the 6 Cell 87 Wh lithium ion battery will only last a few hours under normal conditions, but it is expected for high performance laptops to be power hungry. The Alienware x17 R2 comes with a 240W Small Form Factor adapter which can charge the battery from empty to full in 100 minutes. In conclusion, the Alienware x17 R2 is a very high performance gaming laptop with tradeoffs such as battery life and weight. The performance of the Alienware x17 R2 is impressive compared to other gaming laptops in the market due to the significantly higher graphic power of 175 watts. Thus, it is suitable for heavy gamers or high demand users who require a gaming laptop on the go.
