The Acer Predator Triton 14 strikes a nice balance between its smaller lightweight form alongside performance-crushing power. From the thoughtful design to some seriously powerful specs, this is one of the best 14-inch gaming laptops available. Understand that compromises come in the form of non-upgradable RAM and SSD storage.

The introduction of newer processors like Intel's 14th-gen H series doesn't preclude laptops with the older 13th-gen chips from being worth buying, especially as their prices drop. The Acer Predator Triton 14 is a good example of this and will probably become a good deal as replacements trickle out and as it continues to get less expensive. There are two models of the Triton 14, both of which incorporate an Intel Core i7-13700H CPU and 16GB RAM. The entry model (PT14-51-78B4) is nominally $1,500 but discounted to just under $1,200 at the moment and comes equipped with a 512GB SSD, GeForce RTX 4050 GPU and 1,900x1,200 165Hz display. I've seen it as low as $850, though, which is a great price for it. The higher-end model I tested bumps that up to a 1TB SSD, RTX 4070 GPU and 2,560x1,6000 mini LED screen with a dynamically switchable 125Hz/250Hz refresh rate and DisplayHDR 600 certification. It lists for about $2,000 but is currently going for to $1,600. That's a good price for what you get.

The Acer Predator Triton 14 (PT14-51) is a mind-blowing 14-inch gaming tool. Its performance is great – the optional NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 (Laptop, 105W) can show at least around 100 FPS on Ultra details in the tested titles. The CPU can maintain high P and E core clocks even in prolonged periods of heavy loads, which is a respectable result for such a compact machine. This is possible because of the potent cooling solution. Acer has also applied liquid metal on the processor die. This is a jam-packed notebook – it has a MUX switch to unleash the full GPU power, NVIDIA Advanced Optimus and G-Sync are also on board. The battery life is decent considering the hardware and the high-res display – 6 hours and 40 minutes of Web browsing, or 5 hours and 53 minutes of video playback.

Overall, the Acer Predator Triton 14 could well be the high-performance gaming laptop you've been waiting for, especially if it fits your size requirements, of course. At RM8999, it is a bit pricey. But our main concern is that at 14 inches, despite the high-quality Mini-LED tech behind it, it doesn't really fall into the display size most gamers traditionally play their games on. There is a lower-end version going for RM7599 as well, but the display is only at FHD resolution, the GPU is an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060, and the RAM has been dropped down to 16GB. In general, gamers would likely go for a 15.6-inch or 17-inch display. When you factor in the better battery life, I think the Predator Triton 14 is better suited for content creators.

There are hardly any tablets in this display size range anymore. For subnotebooks, on the other hand, it is the standard format.
The advantage of subnotebooks is that the entire laptop can be small and therefore easily portable. The smaller display also has the advantage of requiring less power, which further improves battery life and thus mobility. The disadvantage is that reading texts is more strenuous on the eyes. High resolutions are more likely to be found in standard laptops.
