If you want a 16-inch OLED with 240Hz refresh rate for under $2,000, you should seriously consider this machine. Asus’s ROG Zephyrus G16 is another 16-inch laptop with an RTX 5070 Ti, a slower Intel Core Ultra 9 285H CPU, and a 240Hz refresh rate, and Asus’s online store has it at $2,799 as I’m wrapping up this review. The Acer Predator Helios Neo 16S AI tries a few other gimmicks. The “AI” branding isn’t a reason to buy this PC over another gaming laptop. And the RTX 5070 Ti GPU — a win on paper — is held back and doesn’t deliver the theoretical high-end performance it might. If you aren’t excited by this OLED at this price, I recommend you consider other options. This display at this price is this machine’s standout feature, not AI.

The Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 AI has been a delight to test. With the latest in CPU and GPU technology, this is a laptop that is built for even the most demanding of creative workflows. Unfortunately, all of this power needs a beefier battery than has been supplied, and it means the laptop will only last around three hours before needing a recharge. Beyond performance considerations, this is a well-built laptop that is a joy to use.

Acer’s new Predator Helios Neo 16S gaming laptop is thinner and lighter than ever, has a new OLED screen, up to RTX 5070 Ti graphics and a premium design. But thinner laptops always come at a cost, so let’s find out what tradeoffs Acer made in this review.

The Acer Predator Helios Neo 16S AI (PHN16S-71) is a fascinating exercise in deliberate choices. Instead of chasing the absolute highest frame rates, Acer has crafted a machine that prioritizes a premium user experience through a stunning display and a remarkably portable design. It’s a high-end gaming laptop for those who value elegance and visual fidelity as much as, if not more than, raw, unthrottled power. This laptop carves out a unique niche, appealing to a user who wants a powerful, do-it-all machine that doesn’t scream “gamer” and is a joy to look at, both in terms of its physical design and its incredible screen. When placed against rivals like the ASUS ROG Strix G16 (detailed review) or the MSI Vector 16 HX AI (detailed review), the difference in philosophy is stark. Competitors are thicker, heavier, and undeniably more powerful, squeezing every last drop of performance from their components.

Acer's 16-inch Predator Helios Neo gaming laptop is certainly slim, although its design isn't really pushing the envelope. Its price, however, is really competitive, which makes it a great option if you're not pushing for the thinnest and lightest possible gaming laptop and just want high-end gaming guaranteed – for less than the key competition.

I know I talked about both the Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 AI and 18 AI here, but my focus is on that 16-inch model. With that OLED screen and powerful specs, this could be a mighty machine of portable gaming. There are some things to worry about here, such as the sheer weight of it and the battery life concerns. But all things considered, Acer’s made improvements where it matters, and I’m excited to see how it fares in our lab testing.

Archive.org versionHow much do you care about aesthetics? While I’d personally pay that little bit extra for the sleek styling of an Asus Zephyrus or Razer Blade, plenty of gamers will be more bothered about the hardware inside their laptops rather than how they look on the outside. If you fall into the latter camp, the Predator Helios Neo 16S AI is absolutely worth a look. It has ample amounts of power on tap, a GPU that’s well matched to the resolution of that gorgeous OLED screen, and enough ports to replace your desktop tower – yet is still just about portable enough to take travelling. Loud fans and merely OK battery life mean it isn’t fully multi-purpose, but it gets very close. Considering how much it undercuts its rivals, those are compromises you could happily live with. It’s a whole lot of gaming laptop for your money, with a stunner of a screen (if you pick the right spec). The Predator Helios Neo 16S AI doesn’t wow like some pricier rivals on the design front, though.
