It’s hard to fault the Helios 16. It has the speed and the features to run today’s most demanding games, and it’s not going to struggle with tomorrow’s. It has a beautiful screen that will make the most of any new-fangled graphics tech. If I had £3,000 to spend on a gaming laptop, I’d have this one high up on my shortlist. It gives you everything that was great about the awesome ROG Strix Scar 16, but at a lower price.

The Acer Predator Helios 16 is an excellent laptop, and only a few laptops can match its value. This laptop is going to be popular for many reasons: beyond the large, 16-inch Mini-LED (2560 x 1600 resolution) display with a fantastic 16:10 aspect ratio, the Helios 16 delivers a powerful Hexadeca-core (16 Core) Intel processor and an Nvidia RTX 4069 GPU that’s optimized for gaming and productivity. More importantly, our complaints here are standard traits of affordable gaming laptops and they don’t affect gaming performance at all. The Helios PH16-71-74UU is large and hefty, and its battery life in gaming is middling, but its performance in these areas is no worse than its competition. And despite its value, the Helios 16 is a sturdy laptop with a beautiful design that’s like to win accolades.

With its eye-catching design, the Predator Helios 16 has left quite an impression on me. But it's really the 240Hz Mini-LED screen that's going to cause frame rate obsessives to flock to this laptop. While 32GB of RAM would be better for this price, you should be able to handle the most demanding games on the market without any stress. Overheating concerns are non-existent, while noise (as long as you avoid Turbo mode) is very manageable too. Usual concerns about the battery life of gaming laptops aside, this is a machine that you could feasibly use for both work and play. It's fast, not too heavy and a comfortable typing experience, while also doubling as a portable gaming powerhouse.

The Acer Predator Helios 16 is simultaneously a solid and quiet gaming laptop with many high-end aspects. Thanks to the economical RTX 4060 and its mature cooling system, gaming sessions will not result in sudden deafness despite the potent 16-core CPU. We were also positively surprised by the fast QHD display and although we were not dealing with the mini-LED display variant, its deployment can be found in the key lighting.

After my time with the Acer Predator Helios 16, I find myself with very few complaints. It performs excellently, is comfortable to use, feels sturdy and well-built and has a gorgeous display. As for the downsides, it's mainly the size and weight that would hold me back from recommending this to everyone. It's a chunky and heavy machine that's best constrained to household use, especially when you factor in the bulk of the hefty power brick. That's nothing unusual, in the world of gaming laptops, but while you might be happy to lug about a behemoth with an RTX 4080 inside, it's a bigger ask when it comes to a specification like this. The upside of that is the excellent cooling. The keyboard area stayed cooler and more comfortable to use on this machine than any in recent memory, and that's no doubt due to the extra breathing room afforded by this sizable chassis.

Once again, the Acer Predator Helios is ready to inspire many people. It is clearly a medium-high-end gaming notebook, which has a ton of capabilities. The inclusion of a super well-populated port selection is great. Two Thunderbolt 4 ports, a MicroSD card slot, three USB Type-As, and more will be enough for pretty much everybody. Its internals are easy to access (although you need the slightly less common Torx screwdriver). You can upgrade your memory, and your storage, as there are two slots for either of them. Acer Predator Helios 16 (PH16-71)’s IPS panel has a WQXGA resolution with a 16:10 aspect ratio, comfortable viewing angles, a good contrast ratio, and a high maximum brightness. It covers 99% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, as well as an accurate color representation. In addition, the display doesn’t use PWM for brightness adjustment.

Acer Predator Helios 16 is one of the manufacturer's first gaming laptops in an updated 16-inch format. It also has up-to-date components and an appropriate level of performance. The standard attributes of gaming laptops, in the form of RGB lighting and even removable panels on the case, are also here. You can complain about the weak sound of the speakers (which is a common problem for most competitors), and the not very convenient location of the USB-A pair on the right side (where they can interfere during games). Why the lion's share of gaming laptops remain without fingerprint or infrared sensors is also an open question. But in everything else, Helios 16 is a good option. However, its price is quite high — 105,999 hryvnias.

And somehow, the lacklustre battery life ends up playing into its desktop replacement design. The Predator Helios Neo 16, as previously mentioned, shines the brightest when it’s tethered to a play station because of its heft, flimsy, fingerprint-prone chassis, and bulky power brick, so keeping it plugged in only completes the equation. At S$2,198, the device graces the moderately-priced market with sleek aesthetics and competent performance, but has some faults that call for greater consideration in the decision-making process. The Predator Neo Helios 16 dominates on the field, showing that it’s possible to look and be great at the same time – even if it does stumble a little elsewhere.
