Acer Aspire Go 15 review: Office notebook with long runtimes for 429 euros

Acer's Aspire Go models are a range of office notebooks in the lower price segment. Our test device - equipped with Core i3-N305, 8 GB RAM, FHD panel, and 512 GB SSD - comes at a price of 429 euros. The competition includes models such as the HP 250 G9 and the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 15ABA7.

Case & features - Aspire Go supports Power Delivery
Acer uses a silver-grey plastic casing with matt, smooth surfaces. The gaps are even, and there are no noticeable material protrusions. The base unit and lid can be twisted, but it remains within limits. Be careful when opening the housing: The battery is held in place by the base plate. Once it is removed, it no longer has any support.
The laptop comes with two USB-A ports (USB 3.2 Gen 1) and one USB-C port (USB 3.2 Gen 2). The latter supports Power Delivery and can output a DisplayPort signal. In total, the laptop has two video outputs (1x HDMI, 1x DP). There is no memory card reader. The webcam (0.9 MP, max. 1,280 x 720 pixels, without privacy shutter) delivers standard fare.
The Go 15 uses an Intel WiFi 6 chip (AX101), which can deliver maximum data rates of 600 MBit/s. Therefore, even under optimal conditions (no WiFi devices in the immediate vicinity, short distance between laptop and server PC), current WiFi speeds aren't achieved.

Input devices - The Acer computer does not have a backlit keyboard
The flat, roughened keys of the chiclet keyboard offer a short stroke and a clear pressure point. The key resistance is okay. The keyboard rocks slightly when typing. It has not proven to be overly annoying. All in all, Acer delivers a keyboard suitable for everyday use. A multi-touch clickpad (approx. 12.5 x 7.8 cm) with a short stroke and clear pressure point serves as a mouse replacement.

The display shows an acceptable color representation ex-works: With a deviation of around 6.1, the target (DeltaE < 3) is not achieved. Calibration reduces the deviation to 3.65 and ensures more balanced grayscales. The panel cannot reproduce the common color spaces (AdobeRGB, sRGB, DCI-P3) completely.

Performance - Enough for Office and Internet
With the Aspire Go 15, Acer has a simple 15.6-inch office notebook in its range that is powered by an Alder Lake N-series processor. This variant is available for around 429 euros. Othe configurations are not yet available at the time of testing.
Test conditions
The notebook does not offer manufacturer-specific performance profiles. The standard Windows power plans were used: "Best performance" (benchmarks) and "Balanced" (battery test).
Processor
The 8 CPU cores of the Core i3-N305 (0P, 8E; Alder Lake) reach a maximum clock speed of 3.8 GHz. Continuous multi-thread load (CB15 loop) causes the clock frequency to drop slightly from the first to the second run. After that, a constant level is maintained. The benchmark values are on par with the CPU average.
The lack of performance cores is particularly noticeable in the single-thread performance relevant for everyday use. Here, the N305 clearly lags behind the Core i3-1215U (2P, 4E) - also an Alder Lake CPU - of the HP 255 G9.

System performance
The smooth-running system is designed to handle office and internet applications as well as streaming services. The transfer rates of the RAM are at a normal level for LPDDR5-4800 RAM. It is not possible to expand the memory in the future: it is permanently soldered, and there are no memory slots.

The PCIe 4 SSD (M.2-2280, 512 GB) from Western Digital basically delivers good transfer rates. However, as it is installed in a PCIe 3 slot, it falls short of its potential. Negative: Thermally induced throttling occurred later in the DiskSpd benchmark. The notebook has no slot for a second SSD.

According to the Witcher 3 test, Intel's iGPU can work permanently at maximum clock speed (1,250 MHz) but ultimately only offers enough power for a few frugal games - at low settings. Benchmark results and frame rates are slightly above the GPU average. The iGPU can show off its advantages when using streaming services: An integrated decoder reduces the load on the CPU when playing common video formats.

Emissions & energy - Acer laptop with very good runtimes
Noise emissions
As soon as the fan starts working, it emits a discreet, high-pitched whistling noise. Unfortunately, it starts up again and again even when idling. The whole thing adds up to a thoroughly annoying background noise, which should not occur in a simple office notebook from the lower end of the performance scale.
We could not find a reason for the frequent fan startup. Neither the computer as a whole nor a specific component heats up excessively. Here we have to hope for a BIOS update that takes care of the fan control. An error/defect in our test device cannot be ruled out either.

Temperature
Under load (stress test, Witcher 3), the computer does not generate too much heat. Values in the mid 40-degree Celsius range are occasionally reached. In everyday use (Office, Internet), the values remain in the green range.
The extreme stress test scenario (Prime95 and Furmark in continuous operation) checks the system stability under full load. The CPU clock drops from 3 GHz to 1.5 to 1.6 GHz immediately after the start of the test. The graphics core runs at quite high speeds.
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 35.8 °C / 96 F, compared to the average of 34.3 °C / 94 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office.
(±) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 44.5 °C / 112 F, compared to the average of 36.8 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 22.4 °C / 72 F, compared to the device average of 29.5 °C / 85 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 22.3 °C / 72.1 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(+) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 27.6 °C / 81.7 F (+5.3 °C / 9.6 F).

Speaker
The stereo speakers produce a decent sound but with hardly any bass. Headphones or external speakers should be used for a better sound experience.

Power consumption
The power consumption is at a normal level for the hardware installed here. A few seconds after starting the stress test, the power consumption drops significantly as the CPU clock is throttled considerably. The power supply unit (65 watts) is more than adequately dimensioned.

Battery life
The 15.6-inch device achieves a runtime of 11:33 h in the practical WLAN test (mapping the load when accessing websites using a script) - a good value. The Aspire Go thus delivers the best runtime in the comparison field.

Verdict - Affordable office laptop for pupils, students and bargain hunters
Slim exterior, relatively low weight (approx. 1.7 kg), practical battery runtimes of around 11.5 h - the Aspire Go 15 is a very mobile notebook. Positive: The battery can be supplied with power via the manufacturer's proprietary power supply unit or via a universal USB-C charger.
With the Aspire Go 15, Acer delivers an office notebook for a small budget that has revealed some weaknesses.
Core i3-N305, 8 GB RAM (dual-channel mode), and a 512 GB SSD equip the notebook for office and Internet use, as well as streaming services. It also has a bright, high-contrast screen (15.6 inches, FHD, IPS).
The fan and its control are the main weak points: As soon as the cooler is running, it produces a not particularly loud but still annoying background noise. We can only hope for a BIOS update from Acer. Other weaknesses include the non-upgradeable RAM and the relatively slow WiFi.
The HP 250 G9 could be an alternative. It offers more computing power (single-thread, GPU) and expandable RAM but is inferior in terms of battery life. Buyers of the HP computer would have to do without Power Delivery.
Price and availability
