Initially thought to be part of the Ryzen 7000G series, AMD's Phoenix-based desktop APUs are now expected to launch early next year under the Ryzen 8000G series. AMD apparently sent engineering samples of models such as the Ryzen 3 8300G, Ryzen 5 8500G, Ryzen 5 8600G and Ryzen 7 8700G to select motherboard makers.

A while back, we were reporting on the new AGESA Combo AM5 1.0.8.0 motherboard firmware, which is adding support for Phoenix-based desktop APUs, leading to the expectations of an imminent launch for the Ryzen 7000G models. However, according to a Taiwanese motherboard manufacturer cited by HKEPC, the naming scheme might jump straight to Ryzen 8000G. Apparently, AMD has provided ES samples for testing, and the unnamed mobo maker received news that the APUs are likely to be part of the Ryzen 8000G series. There are currently four SKUs known, including Ryzen 3 8300G, Ryzen 5 8500G, Ryzen 5 8600G, and Ryzen 7 8700G, with PRO versions also planned.

HKEPC reports that the Ryzen 8000G series will have two different core architectures. Ryzen 3 8300G and Ryzen 5 8500G will use the Phoenix 2 design and adopt a performance + efficiency approach with Zen4 + Zen4c cores. The 8300G will thus have 4 cores (1C+3c ) and 8 threads, while the 8500G will have 6 cores (2C+4c) and 12 threads. Since these are the lower-end models, the graphics core will only have 4 RDNA3 CUs.

Moving to the high-end processors, the Ryzen 5 8600G and Ryzen 7 8700G will use full Zen4 cores (the original Phoenix design). The 8600G will have 6 cores (6C/12T) and the 8700G will have 8 cores (8C/16T), plus 8 and 12 RDNA3 CUs for the iGPU, respectively.

The release date for the Phoenix-based desktop APUs is still shrouded in mystery. AMD has not yet discussed the release schedule with manufacturers, but industry insiders expect to see early 2024 availability when more Ryzen 8000 APUs such as Hawk Point are releasing.
