Premium business laptops like the recently reviewed Lenovo ThinkPad T16 are often still the benchmark when it comes to features. Sure, there are gaming laptops and mobile workstations with more modern standards like Thunderbolt 5 or PCIe 5.0, but as an overall package, business laptops are hard to beat. This starts with the ports, where common connectors are often accompanied by Ethernet ports and SmartCard readers, which is primarily important for larger companies. It is a bit surprising that the AMD version of the ThinkPad T16 Gen 4 also offers two Thunderbolt 4 ports and not just USB 4.0. The maintenance options are also very good with two SO-DIMM slots and it is easy to replace the SSD. It is no problem to access the fan as well as the battery, either, and the keyboard can be removed after you loosen two screws at the bottom.
Wi-Fi 7 is already supported by many modern laptops, but the selection is much smaller if you are looking for a mobile Internet connection. Most consumer laptops do not support 5G or LTE connectivity and if you are often on the road or travelling a lot, you know how annoying it can be to rely on your smartphone or public hot spots. It is just so much more comfortable to activate an integrated 5G connection and thanks to an eSIM, this is also no problem in different countries. Our review unit of the ThinkPad T16 Gen 4 was WWAN-ready, which means it was equipped with a Nano-SIM-card reader (in addition to eSIM) as well as pre-installed antennas.
If you consider things like comprehensive warranties (including on-site services) or guaranteed availability of replacement parts for a certain period, it makes sense why business laptops are often more expensive than similarly powerful devices for consumers.
