With the advent of the AI hype train, prices of gaming GPUs, especially Nvidia's GeForce lineup have witnessed unsightly price hikes. This forced many gamers to turn to the red camp, specifically the latest-gen RDNA 4-based AMD Radeon 9060 and 9070 families.
Price hikes in gaming hardware due to supply constraints and steady demand are nothing out of the ordinary, but the opposite appears to have happened in Japan. As pointed out by GAZ:log, following the shortages of GeForce cards in late 2025, prices for Radeon 9060 and 9070 cards skyrocketed, hitting as high as 45% uplifts in January 2026 compared to December 2025 prices for the flagship Radeon 9070 XT gaming GPU.
Gaming GPU prices: Slight relief for Japanese gamers
However, it now appears that gamers simply stopped buying the aforementioned GPUs at such ludicrous prices, causing prices to trend downwards quite substantially in recent weeks. The data indicates that prices have dropped as much as 15% from their peaks in January, albeit still being well above MSRP. The drop in the prices for the lower-tier Radeon 9060 XT GPU appears to be even greater - around 20% from its peak last month.
That said, GAZ:log correctly points out that the dominating market forces, especially the skyrocketing prices for DRAM, will definitely take a toll on future GPU prices. The Radeon 9070 XT (currently $800 on Amazon) and 9060 XT gaming GPUs both feature 16 GB of GDDR6 memory, and any further increases in memory prices, which have been reported to be quite likely throughout this year, will surely have an adverse effect.
Moreover, pricing variations are more than likely to play out differently in geographically separate markets, which makes Japan's data not necessarily representative of the current global situation.
