Intel Pentium 4405Y vs Intel Core i5-2430M
Intel Pentium 4405Y
► remove from comparisonThe Intel Pentium 4405Y is a very power efficient dual-core SoC based on the Skylake architecture and has been launched in September 2015. Thanks to its extremely low TDP, the CPU can be found in passively cooled tablets and 2-in-1 notebooks. In addition to two CPU cores with Hyper-Threading clocked at 1.5 GHz (no Turbo Boost), the chip also integrates an HD Graphics GPU and a dual-channel LPDDR3-1866/DDR3L-1600 memory controller. The chip is manufactured using a 14 nm process with FinFET transistors.
Architecture
Skylake replaces both Haswell and Broadwell and brings the same microarchitecture in every TDP class from 4.5 to 45 W. The extensive improvements of the Skylake design include increased out-of-order buffers, optimized prefetching and branch prediction as well as additional performance gains through Hyper-Threading. Overall, however, performance per clock has been increased by only 5 to 10 percent (compared to Haswell) respectively under 5 percent (compard to Broadwell), which is quite modest for a new architecture ("Tock").
Performance
Actual performance of the Pentium 4405Y depends on cooling capabilities and TDP configuration of the related device. Overall, the chip should perform similar to a Core i3-4010U (Haswell, 15 W) and has sufficient power for usual office and multimedia purposes.
Graphics
The integrated graphics unit called HD Graphics (Skylake) represents the "GT1" version of the Skylake GPU (Intel Gen. 9). Its 12 Execution Units, also called EUs, are clocked at 300 - 800 MHz and offer a performance in range of the older HD Graphics 4200. Only a few older and less demanding games can be played smoothly in lowest settings. For more information about performance and features, check our page for the HD Graphics (Skylake).
Power Consumption
Specified at a TDP of 6 W (including CPU, GPU and memory controller), the CPU is suited for passively cooled notebooks and tablets. Optionally, the TDP can be lowered to 4.5 watts (cTDP down), decreasing both heat dissipation and performance.
Intel Core i5-2430M
► remove from comparisonThe Intel Core i5-2430M is a fast dual core processor at the time of introduction in Q3 2011. It is based on the Sandy Bridge architecture and offers Hyperthreading to handle 4 threads at once (for a better usage of the pipeline). Compared to the faster Core i7, the i5 offers a smaller last level cache of 3MB. The base clock speed is 2.4 GHz but due to Turbo Boost it can reach 2.7 GHz (2 cores active) and 3 GHz (1 core active). Compared to the 2510M, the 2430M does not support VT-d and Trusted Execution functions.
Sandy Bridge is the evolutionary successor of the Arrandale architecture. The most noteable improvements is the improved Turbo 2.0 and the integration of the graphics card into the 32nm CPU core.
The i5-2430M offers an integrated graphics card (Intel HD Graphics 3000) which is clearly faster then the older Intel HD Graphics in the Arrandale CPUs. As the new GPU is included in the CPU, it is also manufactured in 32nm and shares the fast level 3 cache with the CPU cores (using a new ring bus). In the 2430M it is clocked from 650-1200MHz (with Turbo Boost). The faster Sandy Bridge CPUs are clocked up to 1300 MHz (like the i5-2520M or the otherwise nearly similar i5-2435M).
Furthermore, an improved dual-channel DDR3 memory controller is included on the CPU die that is used by the CPU and GPU part.
Due to the improved architecture and the new Turbo Boost 2.0, the average performance of the Core i5-2430M is higher than a similar clocked Arrandale Core i5. In our benchmarks, the 2430M was able to beat the fast Intel Core i5-560M with 2.7-3.2GHz and is therefore suited for even demanding tasks.
The 35W TDP rating includes the integrated GPU and memory controller.
