Intel Core i5-3380M vs Intel Core i3-4030Y vs Intel Core i3-4025U

Intel Core i5-3380M

► remove from comparison Intel 3380M

The Intel Core i5-3380M is a fast dual-core processor for laptops based on the Ivy Bridge architecture. Due to Hyperthreading, the two cores can handle up to four threads in parallel leading to better utilization of the CPU. Each core offers a base speed of 2.9 GHz but can dynamically increase clock rates with Turbo Boost up to 3.4 GHz (for 2 active cores) and 3.6 GHz (for 1 active core). As its predecessor Core i5-3360M, it offers a 3 MB L3-Cache.

Ivy Bridge is an enhanced die shrink of the Sandy Bridge architecture with improvements on both GPU and CPU performance. The CPUs are produced in 22nm (versus 32nm Sandy Bridge CPUs) and are the first to introduce 3D transistors for increased energy efficiency when compared to similarly clocked Sandy Bridge processors. Other new features are integrated PCI Express 3.0 and  DDR3(L)-1600 support.

The performance of the Core i5-3380M is slightly above a similarly clocked Sandy Bridge processor due to the architectural improvements. As a result, overall performance is about 5-10 % above the old i7-2640M.

The integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 offers 16 Execution Units (EUs) clocked at 650 MHz up to 1250 MHz with Turbo Boost, making it one of the faster variants.

Just like most other Ivy Bridge dual-cores, the i5-3380M is rated at a TDP of 35 W. Therefore, even smaller laptops can use the Core i5.

Intel Core i3-4030Y

► remove from comparison Intel 4030Y

The Intel Core i3-4030Y is an ULV (ultra low voltage) dual-core processor for ultrabooks and tablets which has been presented in Q2/2014. It is based on the Haswell architecture and manufactured in 22nm. Due to Hyperthreading, the two cores can handle up to four threads in parallel, leading to better utilization of the CPU. Each core offers a base speed of 1.6 GHz (no Turbo Boost support).

Haswell is the successor to the Ivy Bridge architecture with improvements on both GPU and CPU performance. The CPUs are produced in 22nm and offer an optimized branch prediction as well as additional execution ports, improving the performance per clock by almost 10 percent. Furthermore, new features like AVX2 and FMA should increase the performance in future applications.

The performance of the Core i3-4030Y is just slightly below the Ivy Bridge based Core i3-3217U (17 W TDP). However, when using new instructions such as AVX2, the performance can be significantly better. Thus, the CPU has sufficient power for office and multimedia purposes as well as most applications.

The integrated HD Graphics 4200 offers 20 Execution Units (EUs) clocked at 200 - 850 MHz (with Turbo Boost), making it somewhat faster than the former HD Graphics 4000 (at similar clocks). However, the HD 4200 is clearly slower than the HD 4400 of other ULV models (with a higher TDP).

The i3-4020Y is rated at a TDP of 11.5 watts (SDP 6 watts) including graphics card, memory controller, VRMs and the integrated chipset.  Therefore, the CPU is suited for very small ultrabooks or tablets.

Intel Core i3-4025U

► remove from comparison Intel 4025U

The Intel Core i3-4025U is an ULV (ultra low voltage) dual-core processor for ultrabooks, which has been presented in Q2/2014. It is based on the Haswell architecture and manufactured in 22nm. Due to Hyperthreading, the two cores can handle up to four threads in parallel, leading to better utilization of the CPU. Each core offers a base speed of 1.9 GHz (no Turbo Boost support). Compared to the Core i3-4030U, the 4025U offers a slightly lower GPU clock, less I/O-ports and lacks support for VT-d.

According to the clock rate, the performance of the Core i3-4025U is right between the Core i3-4100U (1.8 GHz) and Core i3-4158U (2.0 GHz). Thus, the CPU has sufficient power for office and multimedia purposes as well as most applications.

The integrated HD Graphics 4400 offers 20 Execution Units (EUs) clocked at 200 - 950 MHz (with Turbo Boost), making it somewhat faster than the former HD Graphics 4000 (at similar clocks). However, the HD 4400 is slightly slower than the HD 5000 of other ULV models.

The Core i3-4025U is rated at a TDP of 15 W including graphics card, memory controller, VRMs and the integrated chipset.  Therefore, the CPU is suited for small ultrabooks 11-inches or greater.
