Vivo has announced that its X80 series of Android smartphones will deliver a new "breakthrough" in mobile photography. It will be the world's first phone with the Sony IMX866 camera sensor. The brand has yet to divulge any specs on this new kind of camera, although it is tipped to come with multiple upgrades compared to its predecessor.

Sony has been rumored to launch the IMX866 as a new high-end image sensor for smartphones in 2022, and that it might debut as a main rear camera in the upcoming "pro-photography" X80 series. Now, Vivo has confirmed that not only does the CMOS exist, but it will indeed debut in one of these upcoming phones.

Vivo has yet to confirm which of these devices will rock the all-new Sony camera: currently, it has a potential choice of the vanilla X80, X80 Pro or Pro+. The IMX866 is currently thought to debut in the former, with a custom ISOCELL GNV sensor and V1+ image signal processor (ISP) reserved for the higher-end models.

The new Sony CMOS is also currently believed to have a 50MP resolution and to be reduced in size compared to its predecessor the IMX766. Vivo has yet to validate those claims, although it has now announced that it will be RGBW and will have a Zeiss T* treatment for its apparently multi-part lens. The brand will presumably unveil the X80 series, its new IMX866 included, on April 25, 2022.
