The "Redmi Note 12" is slated to debut with next-gen Snapdragon 7 chipsets

Qualcomm has renamed its top-end Snapdragon 8xx series of chipsets to the 8 Gen n line as of 2022. Therefore, it stands to reason that it might do something similar with the next product tier down, the next-gen 7 series of mobile processors. A leaker has hinted that such silicon exists, and that Xiaomi is working to incorporate it into new phones.

Digital Chat Station has purported to confirm that the OEM does indeed have phones with "the mid-range Snapdragon 7 series" on the way. The well-known Weibo account has done so in conjunction with a long salvo of code-names that may or may not have been derived from internal Xiaomi code.

Some of these nick-names for new and unreleased devices have been seen before; for example, thor and loki, loosely associated with the 12 series, are near the top of the list. Those linked to the Redmi K50 (reubens, matisse, fog and munch) line are also present.

However, some other, less familiar, monikers, have made the list. They include light and thunder, which, as Digital Chat Station intimates, refer to the OEM's upcoming foldable phones: the Mix Fold 2 and its putative first-gen clamshell counterpart.

That leaves 4 - zizhan, zijin, taoyao and opal - which, presuming the gamut of Xiaomi's top-end offerings for 2022 are exhausted, might belong to mid-rangers such as successors for Redmi's Note 11 series. Not much is known about them, although they are expected to launch in the next quarter of 2022, and might do so with specs such as 120Hz displays and powerful cameras.
