In the past quarter, Tesla opened the free lifetime Supercharging spigots yet again, after keeping them closed for a good period of time during which second-hand Model S cars with free Supercharging for life fetched a price well above the average for similar listings.
At first, Tesla started offering free Supercharging and FSD in Q3 only for a limited time and just for the Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X, with the notable exception of the electron-guzzling Cybertruck which has the largest battery capacity on a Tesla this side of the Semi truck.
After the three-month bonus period expired, Tesla brought back free lifetime Supercharging for the Model S in Q4, a promo that previous owners loved as their cars kept their value better and for longer. There were more caveats than with the previous free Model S charging offers, though, as the promo was non-transferable to a new owner or car.
Those restrictions kept when Tesla introduced a free Supercharging for life offer last month, only for most expensive Cybertrucks that it needed to clear out of inventory when it started making cheaper non-Foundation Series trims.
The free Cybertruck charging promo was supposed to last until the end of the year, but Tesla has now extended it with another month, as there are still plenty of unsold Foundation Series Cybertrucks in its inventory list.
Unfortunately, the offer is non-transferable yet again, says Tesla, and Cybertruck owners are still on the hook for congestion charges or idle fees at Superchargers:
Customers who purchase a new Cybertruck Foundation Series are eligible for free Supercharging during your ownership of the vehicle. Order must be placed on or after December 27, 2024 and must be delivered by January 31, 2025. Offer is tied to your Tesla Account and cannot be transferred to another vehicle, person or order, even in the case of ownership transfer. Used vehicles, business orders and vehicles used for commercial purposes (like taxi, rideshare and delivery services) are excluded from this promotion. You are still responsible for Supercharger fees, like idle and congestion fees, when applicable. Order is not eligible for Powershare voucher. Tesla reserves the right in its sole discretion to remove the free Supercharging from your vehicle in the event of excessive charging or unpaid fees related to Supercharging. Promotion subject to change or end at any time.
Tesla is currently running more dual-motor and Cyberbeast inventory promos, as it just lowered the price of non-Foundation Series Cybertrucks there directly by more than two grand for some demo vehicles. The Cybertruck price cut is only for the units manufactured last year, though, as the 2025 Cybertruck batches are now eligible for the full federal tax credit amount of $7,500, so one is still better off ordering a dual-motor non-Foundation Series Cybertruck, and waiting a bit for delivery, than snatching one from inventory right away.
When it comes to the Foundation Cybertrucks in inventory, the calculation is more complex, as they now come with a list of options like FSD and accessories worth the $20,000 price difference, as well as with free lifetime Supercharging which will save thousands over the lifespan of the electric pickup that comes with a large 123 kWH 4680 battery pack.
